Sharing a railcard

Hi all,

If person X has:

• a Blackwater - Lewes CDS with Railcard discount £15.45

(and no railcard), and person Y has:

• a network railcard
• a Didcot Parkway - Gatwick CDS with Railcard discount £14.45
• a Gatwick - Brighton SDS £8.00 (no Railcard discount, as on a weekday and < £13)

then am I right in thinking that X and Y can meet in Blackwater and travel to Brighton together?

You have to be a bit more specific. Just saying "Railcard discount" is a bit vague because there are several railcards available. I will assume that this all pertains to a Network Railcard, though feel free to correct me.

I think for your own peace of mind, you're best off reading the terms and conditions of the Network Railcard. Clause 8 does say that the accompanying passenger has to travel with the railcard holder for the entire journey. I read that as the journey as shown on the ticket purchased for the accompanying passenger so I'd say there shouldn't be an issue.

I agree this is permissible but could become problematic if a person needs to get through gates (especially manual blocks) without holding the required Railcard. No idea if this affects the stations in question.

I have also assumed a Network Railcard as the figure of £13 does not arise for any other variety.

The train(s) you use must call at Gatwick Airport.

I think it's valid, but they would have to meet outside the ticket barriers to avoid potential problems.

For the sake of £1.20, would it not save any argument, for Y to split at Blackwater and book to Lewes (or X to Brighton)?

I am assuming both are terminating their journeys at the same place.

It also avoids the FCC-only fare, though that's no great issue with the current timetable.

The £15.45 fare has restriction code W3 which has no Break of Journey restrictions
