'Want some diagramatic examples of my alignment vision? In essence my 4.023km/2.5mile track construction would feed/connect the Larkhall, Uddingston (inc' WCML) & Edinburgh corridors but I've illistrated a more ambitious Northern continuation. Meanwhile, voila!

A Borders extension...
Most redundant trackbed is still intact on the Symington-Galashiels (via Biggar, Peebles etc) is still unobstructed. Reconnecting to WCML @ Symington would bring Glasgow to just over an hour's commute of The Borders.
The only thing that invites me to challenge such pessimism is (1) the presence of dedicated bus-ways (Clyde Fastlink) already in Glasgow and that (2) swathes of tram-line in E'burgh's Broomhouse, Stenhouse & Saughton started out as Glorified/Guided Bus Routes.
However unviable decades ago certain rail-route options, roads weren't then overcrowded at least sufficiently to warrant exploring alternative travel modes. Travrl Census finding may well prove otherwise. Yet given how short-term work/study placements are now more commonplace distance-commuting...
'Dare to differ re' Pencuik. Why? Because an alignment effectively linkng Penicuik with Peebles appears under consideration amongst route options for Waverley's extension.
'Certainly A BIT more feasible nowadays than before Chunnel was built and HS2 started. There have to be SOME new-tech' discoveries thus advances made, ie in Tunnel Boring Technology, in the course of the latter venture. 'Largs to Wemyss Bay link and Callander realignment next?
Whilst not totally inaccessible by a rail 'through-route' (as opposed to 'a dead-end' configuration which weakens St Andrews' campaign), the Peebles corridor is in competition with several alignment options consixered for Waverley extension. Never say never
There have been less feasible reopenings but given the M90 motorway utilises part of the former rail route a new alignment would be required. Again, by no means far-fetched.
Only 4.023km/2.5miles of track would be needed to better connect East Kilbride, Busby & Clarkston to Edinburgh, W Lothian, S Lanarks' & N Lanarks'. Rather than simply terminate EK's extension at Newton or Uddingston, those 2 towns could be served by a suburban-like circular service linking a...
Yeah, excuse my past detail oversight. I see where you're coming from in that Coatbridge Central provides for connectivity (eg a rail-chord) to N-S movements from the Baillieston/Bargeddie line. In hindsight I'd still advocate a 4.033km/2.5mile East Kilbride/Eastwood spur to the WCML. East of...
