I tried both. It seems as though they'd cottoned on as they rolled their eyes when I asked. I could have bought them online in advance or even in the station but unsure how long it takes to arrive on a TVM. I'll just book in advance next time I go. :roll:

NRE certainly seem to think so. There's a route appearing West Drayton > Slough > WE Central > WE Riverside > Feltham. Then from there on in you'd be covered on a travelcard.

Given that an off-peak return from Birmingham to Bangor Gwynedd is £64.80 as mentioned in the OP it's probably safe to say the former.
