S Stock feels dated despite age

It is the process of cooling the air that performs the dehumidifier function. A car's and a train's cooling system both do this. Full air conditioning has an extra step that the cooled air is heated, if necessary, to deliver air at the temperature set by the thermostat. Cars have lots of...

    SWR DMU issues

JIT is all very well for a manufacturing set up. But I am convinced that the unpredictability of maintenance turns JIT into JTL.....Just too late.

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

To answer the acronym question: Chopper used Thyristors of Gate Turn off (GTO) Thyristors to control current to DC traction motors Early AC drives used GTOs to control Variable Voltage, Variable Frequency (VVVF) inverters. GTOs were superceded by Insultated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT). which...

DLR on TfL Journey Planner 28 Feb 2026

I'm trying to plan a journey from Limehouse to Bank on 28th February. TfL's journey planner doesn't offer DLR at all, and sometimes offers two buses to get to Liverpool St then Central line. Disabling buses as a mode option simply offers c2c to Fenchurch St and a 20+ minute walk. I double...

Chiltern MK5s Starting 2026 (non speculative updates thread)

I made the journey today on the 11:02 from London to Birmingham. It was my first experience on a Mk5a standard class and I was pleasently surprised at the seat comfort. There was a 4 piece jazz band playing at the entrance to the platform at Marylebone and staff distributed goody bags too.

    Eurostar issues - 23rd December

Despite some of the horror stories on RailUK Forums, UK delay-repay is a breeze compared with Europe. My one experience following a 3 hour sleeper delay between Amersfoort and Munchen HBf on a sleeper in May 2025 eventually delivered the compensation in October 2025

2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro London)

Weight per axle is an very crude measure of track wear and tear. If all other things are equal, yes, a higher axle weight is worse than a lover value. However there are lots of other factors that impact track wear. These include: unsprung mass, bogie wheelbase and the ability of the axles to...

S Stock feels dated despite age

Must check glasses! Seriously, I still think the estimated value is far too low at circa £92 per seat.

S Stock feels dated despite age

I think the estimated price is wrong if the £5 M and £6 M were intended to be a range. If intended to be something like a cost per fleet, it's at the bottom end of the likely cost. My estimate based on a fleet total of roughly 54,000 seats is around £15 M. That doesn't include the cost of...

2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro London)

As to traction sounds, there are three main sources, the inverters, the motors and the gearbox. Things are ever so slightly complicated on 2024 tube stock as the inverters are on non-bogie cars, unlike all other LU stock where the traction equipment is on the same cars as the motors it feeds...

    D Stock Westcode Brake Question

The only "slip-slide" on D stock was in motoring for control motoring current if wheel spin was detected. There was no wheelslide protection (WSP) system. The brake designers very carefully matched brake force to wheel load (known as balanced or matched) which made the train fairly resistant to...

S Stock feels dated despite age

The seat started wearing unusually early and, in my view, having a form of moquette on the armrests was a mistake. As for LED lighting, S stock's design was about 5 years to early for the designers to confidently adopt LED lighting. Changing both is a big job. With 1403 vehicles introduced over...
