A time when some of us are overcome by joy...
A time when some of us are overcome by love...
A time when some of us are overcome by guilt...
A time when some of us are overcome by sadness...
A time when some of us are overcome by jealousy...
A time when some of us are overcome by indifference...

Yes, it's that time of year again. Valentine's Day is here once more.

Forum veterans may remember the events of the last Valentine's Day through one specific thread I posted: The Worst Day of the Year (for me anyway). Deeply overshadowed by depression, I gave a humiliating account of the misery that this day afflicts on those of us who lack the gift of someone special to share it with.

But this year, things are different. I might still be in the same position as all of the other February 14ths I have lived through (all 23 of them) but otherwise I feel better this year. After all, I have helped some people close to me find someone they could call their own, and there's little better than that. But does it really work that way? Last year, I would have never agreed such a result would be the best from my perspective - I could help others but never myself - but now I feel somewhat happy as this most tiresome of annual events throws itself into our lives once again.

I almost cannot believe I am saying this but I once received a Valentine's Card myself, from a girl who was genuinely in love with me. It took me several years to finally have the confidence to try something - but the day I picked was naïve to say the least, because our GCSEs were starting the next day! Otherwise though, this day has always felt like nothing more than an excuse to make single folk feel bad about themselves, and for those in relationships to look "better" than the rest of us. But not this year - this year, it's just another day that just happens to have a greater requirement to stay inside than normal. I still don't like the day and what it represents - but it won't bother me nearly as much this time around.

So, members of RailUK, what - if any - plans do you have for today? If you are blessed by love, how will you make it that much more special… and if not, what will you do to pass the time?

I'm married blah blah....
To me its an over commercialized date in our calendars. Should you not spoil and show love to loved ones every day of the year?

And you're moaning about being single by the sounds of this!

And my plans, sod all...

Anyone who was or has a chance of special in my life is either disintrested or lives too far away to make a serious go of anything...

Think of the money your saving being single. Go buy yourself something nice with that money, or a day rover ticket and go spend the day with your love of trains/ buses

I don't care I'm single so it's just another day to me why should I do anything different to what I normally do? I'll spend my day on t'internet, walking the dog, reading some books for uni and probably watching some TV oh and browsing the forum of course ;) same as I do most days I'm home from uni.

Alternatively, continue with a lecture on state space analysis of PID controllers, attempting to intergrate a GUI, and wite some utter kak about sustainable development.

Hallmark Holiday. Couldn't care less about the day, I just despise the advertising shoved down our throats.

I shall be preparing for Wednesday

Scumbag* wife: accepts expensive presents, does not give sexytimes.

[From last year's Valentine's Day thread]

Maybe next year I'll have a different perspective on this... or, then again, I could be realistic and know that I won't, and that my circumstances won't be any different.

Now, technically, my circumstances aren't any different - but my perspective is. That's progress :p

-----------------------

Oops. I've just realised that I also said this last year:

Remind me to not bother next year

Sorry Ivo, but you are far too predictable :P - I could have almost put money on betting you would raise a thread like this

Anyway, I had actually forgotten about what today is, until seeing a few people post things on Facebook and actually thinking and realising that yesterday was the 13th. As for what I'll be doing today - same old really - work, browse RUK, browse Facebook, possibly be on MSN - so nothing particularly exciting.

It is quite funny what reminded me of this though - someone I have on Facebook posted this:
"Since when were valentines cards sold in packs of three's....is that if you can't decide who you fancy and you're gonna try your luck with all three!?"

Which also then reminded me that I overheard someone today say they had bought their girlfriend a 29p Valentines card...

OK, I plan to wake my grilfriend up by calling her around 3 pm - sometimes the 7 hour time difference works in my favour ! ;)

PS seeing her next week - she's already opened my valentine !

Is it wrong that when I think of Valentine's Day I automatically think of the masscare and not the love aspect?

Taking her out to lunch. No different to what we normally do mind, but she'll think it's special because I'm doing it on Valentine's Day.

Me and our lass are dumping the kids on her mother, and going out to the harvester (thats posh for us), then home for some er........ woopie (not like that doesnt happen every day though, no change). I have to say though I agree that its become a bit too commercialised (in fact as far as I can remember its always been that way).

My girlfriend cooked a GIANT sausage roll for me yesterday. Or maybe "constructed for me" is a better way of putting it: I mean seriously, the colossal thing was about eighteen inches long. It was awesome! :D

And today, I'm doing something that even I, with my deep seated love for the place, thought that I would never do on Valentines' Day: I'm taking her out for a meal at Wetherspoons  So just like any other day for me really :D In my defense, it's because I have vouchers, and I've been told that I could only use the majority of them if I took her out for a meal. Which rather defies the point of having the vouchers in the first place to be honest. Aaaand 'Spoons are doing a Valentines' Day deal on two Aberdeen Angus steaks and a bottle of wine for just over twenty quid, and it has long been our aspiration to order the most expensive item on the Wetherspoons menu. Plus it's not like we don't go out for meals at more upmarket locations at other times of the year. I'm considering working a trip on one of the former Wrexham & Shropshire "silver trains" into this as well, taking the 15:55 from Moor Street down to Leamington Spa and having dinner there.

And me and the missus are going away to Edinburgh for three days next week, to stay in Carberry Castle. Although it means no less than a total of nine hours on dreaded Voyagers there and back. :|

I'm also picking up a couple of tickets for the Steel Panther gig at the end of March for me and her: Not just because it's Valentines' day, I would be doing it anyway because she's too skint to buy one herself, but it does give me the added impetus to do it sooner rather than dragging my feet over the inevitable expenditure and waiting until the last minute when all the tickets are sold out.

So for me, Valentines' day consists of a giant sausage roll, Wetherspoons and a Steel Panther gig. I think it is readily apparent here that I am with the right girl. :D

EVERY day? And with little 'uns to look after as well? My word you've got it good, and your passions must know no bounds! :D

You should have said that last year instead of trying to appease me! :D

Just call it "woopie" like deltic1989 did (Post #25)...
