Best/worst station toilets

ok so having recently used a truly revolting facility at Warington BQ I thought it was high time for opperaters of similarly gastly establishments to be, ehem, flushed out and those who are making an effort praised. Primarilly talking rail stations but bus stations, airports and maybe the odd on train facility (excluding voyagers as we no they stink) are welcome.

The best IMO are at Leeds. Worst is Victoria. I'll elaborate tomorrow.

Considering how dreadful the rest of the station is, I've always found Birmingham New Street to be pretty good. You know something is wrong when the best part of a station is the provision and cleanliness of its toilets! If only Network Rail didn't charge for their use

IMHO, Euston has pretty clean toilets, along with Liverpool Street.

Manchester Piccadilly's are quite clean, but those over at Manchester Victoria require renovation.

It would be interesting to know from Network Rail how much of the charge for using their facilities is actually used to maintain them.

I've always found London Bridge's toilets to be pretty vile.

Personally I prefer that there is a charge for using station toilets (especially unbarriered stations) as a way of deterring vagrants and undesirables.

Have never used man vic but as somebody with a heightened sense of smell im not sure I want too!

It doesn't stop people from Not Paying. I remember BTP were called in at London Victoria to tell sleepers in the toilets to leave.

I was surprised at how poor the Gents toilets were at St Pancras yesterday morning, especially considering they're quite new. Broken hand dryers and an inability to flush properly, even one cubicle unusable due to the toilet being full and blocked.
Next time I need anything more than a "quick visit" I'll pay the 30p for King's Cross. They're always clean and well-maintained.

I find St Pancras okay (the ones by the Circle are probably a lot nicer though) but the sink design means they're wet all the time (both the surface around the sinks and the floor).

The toilets down on the FCC lower level platforms (one disabled toilet on each platform, A & B) are often out of use after people have made a nice mess. Staff seem uninterested in doing anything about it whenever I've reported it too, admittedly usually quite late in the evening.

I think Stoke on Trent should get a mention here, clean and free of charge.

I am always surprised at how bad the bogs in the Virgin lounge at Euston smell, they seem quite new but they really pong!

I remember Glasgow Central's toilets about 15 years ago. Junkies and rent boys everywhere. Very scary. Good job on them cleaning it up now.

I have to agree on Queen Street. I went in there last week to get some tissue as I spilt coffee down me and in the one cubicle it was covered with graffiti and the toilet hadn't been flushed

I agree, they are not very pleasant, but at least they are open. The toilets at Greenwich have been "temporarily closed" for so long now I really cannot remember the last time they were open, sometime last year I think.

I have switched to using the toilets on the train, they are still free, maybe they will charge for those soon! In Liverpool (Lime St) I used Wetherspoons - put my 30p towards a coffee etc!

I was pleasantly surprised by those at Kings Cross when I last used them, really wasn't expecting them to be so clean. Good job NR - well worth paying to be honest.

I'd nominate LU as having some of the worst toilets. I've had variable experiences at Chalfont & Latimer, but Woodford takes the crown for most disgusting I've been in. Northfields has very retro toilets - not that great but better than both of the above.

Not for issues of cleanliness, I'd also nominate the toilet on the island platform at Sheffield for the worst category. Normally its fine but in the current cold weather leaving doors open at each side with no heating makes it quite an endurance test to use it

The toilets at Shrewsbury are not usually dirty but I wish ATW would move them to larger facilities elsewhere on the station. For those who don't know, the current toilets - male and female - are squeezed into the former station signalbox on the end of platforms 5 & 6. There's no room to expand them there.

It's one of those things which I fully expect not to have changed in 40 years time.

I use the toilets at St. Pancras frequently when I'm up that way, and they seem ok to me. It's one of my preferred places actually. I always use the ones in the corner by the Southeastern platforms.

Toilets on trains tend to be not very nice ime; and they're frequently out of soap and/or water.

Speaking of station toilets, I have a dislike of Southeastern's habit of having bar soap instead of liquid soap in theirs. Doesn't seem very hygienic to me.

I haven't been to Paddington for a bit now, but I always remember you had to descend the dingiest looking staircase to get to the toilets but once down they were absolutely immaculate. Presumably because no one was making a mess because they just couldn't bring themselves to go down.

Chester's are awful in Winter given they're basically outside hock:

Manchester Victoria's are awful all the time, Wigan North Western's match the rest of the station in terms of unparalleled misery and Burnley Manchester Road IS a toilet.

The best; London Waterloo is hard to beat, Manchester Piccadilly isn't bad but my nominee for the best is... Sheffield.

London Waterloo aren't too great if I'm honest, Victoria's is nicer. Southampton Central both sides are truly disgusting, hopefully they get a refurb during the P4 entrance works.

I have to admit, the putting up of the paper on the wall surprised me at first, but it makes a nice change from the adverts about things you have no interest in...

what if the story continues on the next double page spread though, do you have to move on down to read it?!
