Oyster extension charged at National Rail rate?

On Sunday, I travelled from a rail station in zone 6 to underground zone 1. I have a zone 3-6 travelcard, so I expected to be charged for the zones 2-1 part on pay as you go, which I was.

However, despite changing to underground in zone 4, I was charged at the national rail extension rate (£3.10) not the underground rate (£2.00), despite the extension of my journey being entirely on underground.

Why is this? Am I being penalised for having my travelcard and season on the same oyster ?

If I'd used a separate payg oyster for the second part of my journey, I guess I would have saved £1.10 ? (This would have involved getting off and on again in zone 3, but even if I didn't, a 1-4 single is only £2.60 if I paid payg from zone 4!)

I think that the system determines that you're making a combined NR & TfL journey first of all, then discounts the part covered by your Travelcard, leaving a Z2-1 journey, but still considers it a combined TfL/NR journey.

There's not an easy way around it AFAIK; you can touch out at a Z3 Tube station and then back in which should get it treated as two separate journeys (as long as it's not also an OSI).

Fulwell to South Kensington via Wimbledon

(ps correction to the above, Wimbledon is in zone 3 not 4. But the point still stands...)

Also, it looks as if had I had a travelcard in to zone 2, then I would have been charged at tfl rates:

From http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14414.aspx

"Using pay as you go for extension fares for National Rail through journeys
Look at this National Rail fares map (PDF 465KB)

The extension fare will be charged as a National Rail though fare when:

Any part of your journey is on a red route on the map
And National Rail through fares apply for the journey you are making
And you have a Travelcard valid for any zonal combination in Zones 3-6
The extension fare will be charged as a Zone 1 TfL fare when:

Any part of your journey is on a National Rail route (either red or green on the map)
And National Rail through fares apply for the journey you are making
And you are travelling into Zone 1
And you have a Travelcard which is valid for any of the following zonal combinations:
Zones 2-3
Zones 2-4
Zones 2-5
Zones 2-6
Zones 2-7
Zones 2-9"

As has been said, the journey is decided first, then any zones covered by the travelcard are taken off, then the remainder is charged at the rate applicable for the whole journey.

You're lucky though as there is an easy way round it. You can touch out and in again at Wimbledon which will turn your journey into two journeys where the first (from Fulwell) is entirely paid by your travelcard and the second is entirely on the District line and charged as such.

I have similar problems travelling between Lee and Heathrow with a Z1-3 Travelcard.

Presumably you're getting caught by the OSI between the NR and LU gates when changing at London Bridge. If you can touch in on a bus (and get straight off the bus again, you don't have to travel anywhere) in between touching out of the NR gates and in to the LU ones (or vice-versa for the other direction) then that'd break the OSI and start a new tube-only journey. The bus touch won't cost anything as you have a travelcard.

No, you're being charged for a mixed NR/LU journey which is exactly the type of journey that you are doing.

If you choose to split your journey into two seperate journeys then you'd be charged accordingly for each portion.

Yes, but it seems nonsensical that two separate journeys are cheaper than one through journey. Its not as if National Rail is carrying me any further...

...and if my travelcard went one extra zone, they wouldn't do this, even though the journey is still mixed

Correct. I now either go to the surface at Green Park and touch out and in again or go via Waterloo East and just don't touch in entering there, as it's ungated.
