Where ? Must have closed VERY early on.

If you look at some of the earlier station date closures in this quiz, you will find dates of 1870 (twice), 1843 and 1861, so don't be surprised what stations appear......this is the reason why I chose this particular leg on the quiz, knowing there were quite a few "early closures".

This leg has led to some differences of opinion and not wanting a lack of harmony, I will say that the final two closed stations are.....

I wil now set a new leg where both the starting and finishing stations are closed. It starts at the closed station of Wigan Central, following the line of the Wigan Junction Railways, then taking the Glazebrook East Junction to Skelton Junction line and finally taking the route from there to the final closed station of Stockport Tiviot Dale.

This leg has led to some differences of opinion

I would say "healthy discusssion". Bear in mind that unlike you I don't have any reference works to refer to, except a 1960s atlas (though I do sometimes cheat and use Wikipedia !). So I am genuinely interested in the history of these stations and their names. I would be interested if people could post all the various names a station has had (though not making it compulsory).

I will say that the final two closed stations are.....

Amber Gate is not to be confused with the currently open station of Ambergate which was bypassed by the North Midland. Can anyone say when Amber Gate was renamed Ambergate ? Was it when the station moved (1863) ?

That indeed is the correct station in Cheadle...

The next leg is a tribute in its starting section to some steam hauled freight trains of days of yore....now long since elapsed.

This leg starts at the open station of Bishop Auckland and takes the route of the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway in a westerly cross-Pennine direction until it reaches the WCML, which it then uses to proceed northwards to a major transport hub in the leg middle section, before carrying on its final leg in a southerly direction down the Cumbrian coast line to the open station of Workington.

Brave effort, but wrong railway line..... Musgrave is the station between Kirkby Stephen East and Warcop on the Eden Valley Line.

Just like the First TPE services from Manchester Airport to both Newcastle and to Middlesbrough do at Manchester Piccadilly. Another reversal will also occur later on at Carlisle. Two reversals is not unheard of and is the only way that this three-part journey could be made.
