Western have 53219 on the X75 into Carlisle today. It arrived at Stranrear last night and it is believed it could have replaced the useless and unreliable 52675.

16337 on the 38 & 66 today which is not exactly rare considering the kids are off while 34679 was on the 76. It is possible that as is quite common 34679 was taken off the 38 first thing so the town network could stay low floor with the decker better suited to the 38. The other 38/66 was a DNO MPD.

I'm back, after that pointless suspension.

I got a poor shot of 15723 in Keswick on saturday morning, unfortunately after losing my temper with the camera I won't be uploaded until I get a better shot of one.

As expected, Kendal are still using all their reserve B10Ms; 20219/474/456 all observed this morning.

20711 was on a 42A as well - I felt sorry for the large number of OAPs on it!

Are you sure you saw 20456? As far as I am aware it is still at Carlisle. Was it not on the Penrith run?

No, not at all sure about 20456. Was from a distance going opposite ways at speed.

I probably am wrong.

A bus war in Carlisle between transport giant Stagecoach and family firm Reays is being used as an example of how competition can drive up standards for passengers.
Reays’ City Hopper service, launched last year, is challenging Stagecoach for supremacy on some of the city’s most popular bus routes.
And that battle is being hailed by the Competition Commission as exactly the kind of tussle it wants to see in towns and cities across Britain to give passengers greater choice and drive up standards of service.
The commission released a report yesterday criticising the lack of competition in most of Britain.
The study found that the five largest bus companies were carrying 70 per cent of passengers and operating virtual monopolies in some areas.
Such has been Reays success in Carlisle, it now serves 20,000 customers a week and was named Britain’s best independent operator at the UK Bus Awards.
Chris Reay, managing director of the Wigton-based firm, welcomed the commission’s findings.
“We are one of the few smaller companies really going in hard and taking on the big boys,” he said.
“A lot of areas are looking at what we are doing in Carlisle and using that as an example of how smaller operators can be successful.
“People don’t realise how much these big companies are making out of city centre routes – it’s millions and they are also getting millions in Government subsidies.
“They want the routes that are profitable and they either cut the routes that are not or ask the council for a subsidy.
“Companies like ours can still operate those routes because we don’t need to make these massive profits,” added Mr Reay.
“Even Stagecoach would admit they have raised their game since we came on the scene.”
The commission said there were about 1,245 bus companies in England, Scotland and Wales, carrying 2.9 billion passengers a year.
But the five largest operators – Arriva, FirstGroup, Go-Ahead, National Express and Stagecoach – carried 70 per cent of those passengers.
The commission also found that head-to-head competition between operators was uncommon and that, on average, the largest operator in an urban area ran 69 per cent of local bus services.
It said it had identified a number of factors that restricted entry and expansion into local areas by rivals and otherwise stifled competition.

I'm surprised a bus company hasn't gone into the lancaster/morecambe area to compete with stagecoach on the uni services, there only is travellers, battersbys and kirby lonsdale and they have their own routes and some of them are LCC tenders .

The routes operated by Battersby (9, 18, 28) & Travellers (8A, 8C) in Lancaster, are all subsidized by LCC.

Which are currently under review, with the view of possible cut backs, as LCC are still trying to save, yet more money!

Not like they have £300Million in reserves or anything...oh wait

I think Travellers set a very good example of how LCC tendered services should be run. Battersby should take note.

Reays could do with a little more rivalling on their West Cumbrian services for a little more 'tussle' over in the West! He really needs to ditch the ruddy Merc 709D's, they may be indestructible and may be Chris's ickle babas he's had since day dot and so wants to keep hold of. There may be little competition with the routes he runs in West Cumbria but the routes deserve better now in todays climate - now that he seems to think he has a firm place in Carlisle (which I agree) as he's lasted this long up in the city, so good on him.

Whats wrong with the 709s? From a companies point of view they are not costing him much to run and are much more reliable than his 2 54 plate Varios have been. For all they are old they are still very smart buses and he does seem to look after them. Just a shame they are not in Carlisle very often although they are often on the 95's these days with his Varios going walkabout for weeks at a time.

Morecambe's 25223 seems to have lost it's rear advert- it did have one, didn't it? Something about the back of it looked odd today anyway...

What looked like an accident in Lancaster this evening outside the bus station at the bottom of the hill. One way closed and traffic diverted through town.

Noted an E300 on the 3 heading around the back roads near the Dukes which is a first!

Imagine timetables have gone out of the window!

Hope nobody involved was seriously hurt.

Now you know I do not like to disagree but I have to here,
I wonder just how much of the lost, mileage on the 8A / 8C actually gets passed to LCC.

Mmmm interesting thought. Obviously I know nothing of how it all works in detail. I meant more that Travellers have a good image and LF buses etc.

Merry Christmas to all.

Slight accident earlier @ Devonshire Square in Blackpool involving a No. 61 service which had scraped alongside a car and was wedged against it. I thought the last thing the Driver would want to contend with on Christmas Eve!

Gez, is right there is lost milage on 8A / 8C, which LCC is fully aware off.

This lost milage can be put down to the impossible timings by given by LCC and the large number of traffic lights, which as made it near impossible to run a bus service in Lancaster. (i.e. the 8C is allowed 6-mins from the Centenary Building at the RLI to the Bus Station, a distance of 1.3miles, and passes through 11 sets of traffic lights).

Timing really is an LCC forte you only need to look how often the Wyre Villager runs twnty minutes late
anyway best wishes to all for Christmas, I will be making full use of my day off already on the Vino

happy new year one and all... I would like to take this time to announce that i will no longer be a user of this system. I have made many new friends over the past 3 year but as of late i believe the forum has started to slip away from its original intention. Furthermore i dont want to unintentionally and/or accidentally compromise my position as an employee of Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire. I may change my mind... But it is doubtful  That's Captain Slow Over and Out!
