Shame there weren't any HST power cars going to Kilmarnock for work too - would it have made one of the longest HST "sets" ever?

Even so... How often would you "normally" get 12 Mk3s together on the network (assuming the barrier cars aren't Mk3s)?

WCML Sleepers. Euston-Glasgow/Edinburgh leaves Euston as 12 Mk 3s and 4 Mk 2s

EDIT: Though Mk 3s are separated from each other by Mk 2s so yeah I guess you're right.

The two 47s are in mulitple and should stay so for the entire movement. The barriers will be returning to St.Philips Marsh and then the 47s will most likely head for Rugby or Washwood Heath.

The barriers are required because HST coaches are not fitted with screw couplings. 6330 had to come to St.Philips Marsh on a lorry as FGW were incapable of moving it their themselves.

6330 is a MK2, 6348 a MK1

This may be a silly question. With all the departure of those buffet cars is there catering on FGW services? Has it been relegated to trollies stowed in the guard's van?

They're all unused ones going for refurbishment... some are faded and have not been used in a long while - there are some in the old livery and some in the new one!

These coaches became surplus a couple of years ago when around 18 of FGW's HSTs were reduced from 8 to 7 cars, these vehicles being removed from the sets. To provide catering in these rakes, each set had a TS vehicle converted to a micro-buffet. It is somewhat amusing that the same vehicles that were removed from these sets are being rebuilt to be put back into them!

Why did they need two locos at all, since only one seemed to be running. That must have been a pretty hefty load for one loco, 14 + a second loco.

Two locos were required as for a single loco this was quite a load and therefore quite a risk, with special regards to TDA and the like. For the Carlisle trips one loco was shut down to conserve fuel, as like you say, the load was now sufficient for one. The second loco is still along for security......unless its failed and I've not been told:p!

I can definitely see a headlight (one small one in the centre of the leading 47) and a tail light as well.

Also the St Phillips Marsh - Eastleigh move was top-n-tailed in order to depart Bristol, so two loco's were needed :)

Those of you who read the first post will have observed that the train was being split into two to go from Carlisle to Kilmarnock. Hence 6 carriages.

I think you need to get to be earlier... the track curves away out of sight behind the platform shelter. The rearmost visible carriage is one of the pink doored mrk3s, not a barrier, and you can't see the rear door!

I was basing that on the fact that the photographer who uploaded image knew the difference between 6 and 12 as it is in his description.

Oh yeah.... so i do need to get to bed earlier but for different reasons.
