Service incidents

05:10 Plymouth to London Paddington due 09:44

This train has been revised. It will no longer call at: Plymouth, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Didcot Parkway, Reading and London Paddington. This is due to a train fault.

This train will be formed of 2 coaches instead of 8 between Exeter St Davids and Bristol Temple Meads and 4 coaches instead of 8 between Bristol Temple Meads and Swindon.

Looking at this it sounds horiffic but when you take into accound there is another HST following behind and the unit is taking the few passengers that would travel between Taunton, Bristol and Swindon with london passengers being sent on the following HST via Westbury.

i'm pleased to see a bit of intiative rather than just the automatic response of cancelling it. A nice long non stop run, or with few stops, sounds quite fun actually.

If you ever see the 17.36 Paignton for example, although it is full and standing from London, after Newbury a two-car 150 could accommodate the remaining passengers with seats to spare.

A friend mentioned that a couple of weeks ago he wound up in the the driving cab, along with his bike and two other passengers, when a similar incident occured on the same line. Whilst I know more details, I'll spare them from being public knowledge.

Well at least the stand-in units are more modern (ahem) than the train they're replacing...
We'll have to agree to disagree on that! :) Have you seen the interior of a Class 150 compared to a FGW HST? I don't like the cramped style of the new seating, but it's certainly a lot more modern!

The engines are far more modern on HSTs too (though I'd prefer they weren't from a personal point of view! ;))

It's not the first time a Pacer has reached Swindon on a Paddington service from the West country!

The longest Pacer vice HST that has happened before is Exeter - Swindon! (Correct me if I'm wrong here). Also, there has been a few Pacers in the past between Plymouth/Exeter and Bristol on both FGW and XC services before when the diagrammed HST/22x has failed!

142s are only signed by Exeter crew, 143s are also signed by Bristol and Gloucester crew I believe. Means the only day a pacer can make it to Penzance is Sunday, since that is the only day were a unit in Cornwall is worked only by Exeter crew. In the week all units are worked by Par or Penzance crew at some point.

...They are indeed, and also by Westbury men.

I did once travel on a Class 143 from Saltash to Plymouth a few years ago on a Penzance-Bristol service, which was substituting for a Class 158. Needless to say the train was packed, although it was only running 5 minutes late. I don't know how they cope over the Devon banks I'm sure!

How did a 142 get as far as Swindon if only Exeter crews sign them?

im not with it on signing but could they have a driver who knows the stock and a driver who knows the route and drive the train?

Yes they could have either a route or traction conductor with them. But there must be someone on board who signs both. That applies to both driver and guard

HSS drivers at many FGW depots now sign units, some HSS guards now sign units as well. I believe an Exeter high speed driver worked the 142 to Swindon with an Exeter west guard route conducted beyond Bath Spa (or Bristol depending on what Exeter guard was used).

Thanks for the clarification, wasn't sure if Westbury had retained traction knowledge after the 143s were transferred to mainly work in Devon. Though Gloucester and Bristol retained knowledge for the Severn Beach line.
