Of course there will be (excessive) noise sometime if you stay more than 5 years near a railway ! New trains, new services, new timetables, etc.
I don't think that any reasonable member of the public would expect to have trains sitting for long periods of time idling a few metres from their homes or a regular basis, unless they lived near a station. And expecting people to foresee such an event is IMO entirely unrealistic.
Expecting noise from passing trains in one thing, noise from idling trains is another - and IMO much worse as you know the former will only last a second , while the latter goes on and one leaving the householder wondering when it will end.
At the end of the day the railway is these households neighbour and I don't think it is unreasonable to expect neighbours to make small reasonable adjustments to allow their neighbours to comfortable and peacefully enjoy their own homes. I would not expect to be able to get away with using a petrol grass cutter in my back garden at 6AM every week - but my grass still needs cut sometime!
We have been told by someone in the know that Virgin have an alternative available further way from these homes - as it exists I do not think it is unreasonable to expect that they show a minimum standard of courtesy and consideration to the residents by using this alternative. If they do not they may find themselves being forced to by the local council (though I would like to see the council officers confiscate that particular piece of "noise making equipment"
