Only the Destination (as printed on the ticket) should be able to retain the ticket- this is encoded in the magnetic strip.

Under the Railway Group Standards concerning ATGs, a new installation or change of use must allow a period of time to enable passengers to get used to them being there. During that time the barriers will accept everything that has a working, undamaged magnetic strip which has been issued by a rail TIS.

Essentially, it is on "Accept All", and will eventually go to "Full Checking" or "Special Rules" within a couple of weeks. Just in time for the scallies who take advantage of the "Accept All" mode to get caught out :)

Somebody in FSR HQ or CUBIC will also now have to regularly customise the ATG basedata based on usage statistics and LENNON data to ensure the Break of Journey tables are up to date and valid, new NLCs are added, routes are blocked/accepted as required, new ticket types added, and time/status restrictions are implemeted properly. Probably will be reviewed daily for a month or two, then some analyst will do an update once a month or so.

No, it's not. When they came in I tried an Edinburgh - Glasgow Central ticket and it didn't open, as it didn't recognise EDB

Ticket gates appear to be partially installed at Central High Level. Across platform 7 area if I remember correctly not fully constructed and seemed to be a bit different design from the ones at low level unless they just aren't finished being constructed and thats why they look different.

Yeah, I was going to post that. Seem to be across 7 and 8.

The gates are all erected. I tried to take a quick picture but wasn't going to risk it with all the police about. Various station announcements says that the gates are "coming soon".

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail's managing director, said: "Revenue protection and reducing ticketless travel have always been priorities for us because it is honest, fare-paying passengers who bear the burden in lost investment in Scotland's railway.

When Mr Montgomery says fare-paying passengers who bear the burden, what he actually means is his FirstGroup shareholders are currently bearing the burden.

If these gates generate extra ticket sales by reducing fare evasion, what exactly will FirstGroup do with the extra money raised ?

Give a small amount of it to Transport Scotland :(

Obviously it will be spent on solid gold castles for all the shareholders.

Or more realisticly, it will be used in years to come as reason to reduce public subsidy, reducing the monetary input from the taxpayer and from those who don't use the trains at all.

I really hope these accept Zonecards.

In my experience Zonecards bought at train stations work but Zonecards bought elsewhere don't (even after you have validated them at a Subway station for use on that).

I now buy my Zonecard at the Travel Centre in St Enoch's rather than my new local station.

When you can't just nip through the barriers you get caught up with people with prams, people making enquiries to the staff manning the spare gate, people who can't work the barriers and others who have tickets that aren't accepted.

So introducing station gates may benefit taxpayers who are non-rail users ?

Oh ... does that mean I now can ask car users to drive less so I'll have more space on the roads for my bus trip to work ? That would benefit me.

No, you'll still need to go through the manual gate for a Zonecard.

I never had to go through the manual gate when travelling through Queen st with my zonecard. Why would they change this now? It seems a little silly.

The gates across 7 & 8 looked as though they were in operation this morning.

Yep, fully functional and no doubt still surprising some people. They were wired up (lights on, displays functional) yesterday but only got switched on this morning.

No more free rides from the Southside into town :)

As expected my Zonecard didn't work today in these gates. They better get that fixed, it's okay boarding at Central having to get someones attention but it will be a nightmare in the morning getting off the train (my morning commute wasn't on one of the gated platforms). These trains are packed.

How difficult is it to fix this and does anyone know if they are planning on making sure they do work?

Where do you purchase your ZoneCard out of interest? As far as I heard, if you buy the ticket portion at a ScotRail station then it will operate the barriers however if you buy it at a SPT Travelcentre such as St Enoch then it will not work. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I haven't renewed my ZoneCard at a ScotRail station for a few years now as the ink on a 10 week ticket became illegible after about 5-6 weeks and was virtually blank by weeks 9-10. Too much hassle.

What you have said is right, I buy mine at the St Enoch Travel Centre, I'll get it from the station in future but it has a few weeks left to run and is going to be a pain in the preverbial from now on.

"Doesn't work mate"

"Try it"

"Told you"

How about Roundabout tickets? We bought some when in Glasgow last year from Exhibition Centre and they wouldnt open the gate at Queen Street. They seemed to be to be set up as Singles and not Rangers, and so reject if entry is attempted at any station other than point of issue. Might have to buy one and try it at each gated station, keeping a note of the staff response each time.

Rip out the gates, put those seventy members of staff on the trains. Electricity and maintenance contract savings can then pay for a few more staff. Then you have the staff where they are most useful, checking ticket validity by service and also enhancing on train security.

But you would still end up missing people, be it through overcrowded trains, failed Advantix machines, uncovered turns, staff not carrying out duties... the gates stop that.

Frankly, every station should be gated. I hope one day they will be.

Well I'm afraid they are rolling stock and staffing issues respectively. If a TOC doesn't want to provide adequate facilities, the staff can't be bothered or the trains are overcrowded then they should be dealing with those problems, not effectively passing on the blame to the passenger.

And as for every station being gated, please enlighten us as to how you would barrier Dove Holes or Corrour?

People better learn to use these things soon, it's taking ages to get through them in the morning with people fumbling about or tickets not working.

I used to commute to QS when they were put in there and it was the same, does my head in though.

At least my new Zonecard bought at a station works now.

Well, how many stations are there on the national rail network.... would certainly help with "job creation"......
