FGW Class 158 diagrams

I need only one more Class 158 - 158763 and I was wondering where I might see it.

I recently spent time on Bristol Temple Meads and saw several of its fellows but not it.

Are there any Class 158 diagrams that don't include Temple Meads?

I've seen it on Gloucester-Bristol-Weymouth diagrams, and I think they're all based at St Philip's Marsh, but it could be working out of Exeter at the moment, or Maybe it's out of traffic at the moment.

Yes - it helps to know that it's in service.

I'm gambling on it being in Temple Meads on 21st - where I plan to be courtesy of Arriva Trains Wales's Club 55 offer. I'm looking forward to working through the diagrams to see if I can predict where it might be on that day.

As two diagrams finish at St Phillips Marsh it is possible for trains to get out of order on the diagrams. Could work 2 then 1 again for example. Units can also stay at St Phillips Marsh for a period of time to have work done, or an exam. There are 5 units for 4 diagrams as well, so if all 5 are available the 5th could end up on a 150 or 153 diagram. Similarly they could be short of 158s and a 150 could be used instead. If they are short of 3-car 158s its quite likely a 2-car 158 will end up on a 3-car diagram. The 2-car 158 diagrams are probably the least likely to actually turn up as booked traction out of any of the FGW fleet.

I thought these diagrams would be simple to understand but maybe I'm missing something so can I ask a couple more questions?

First - there are four diagrams but there are 5 or 6 full working days in the week - so do the diagrams apply to Sunday working too or is there a separate Sunday diagram?

Second - once a unit has finished working through the four diagrams, do they go back to Diagram 1 and repeat the cycle (I note your comment that 158s might do other diagrams too)?

There are separate diagrams for weekends, all these diagrams should work every weekday. A unit could well just carry on cycling through the diagrams, back to 1, or it could come off for maintenance.

By the 21st it is quite likely it would have had a day off for maintenance. Saturday and Sundays can mess up the order as well. At the end of the day, you'll just have to see what turns up on the day.

They will frequently cover 150 diagrams as well. As for cyclic diagramming, this is purely theoretical. On a given day, the diagram it works will be decided by the depot if that's where it ended up the night before, or by the Control if it has been outstabled somewhere like Westbury or Gloucester. 158's rarely work beyond Taunton these days except on a Saturday night.

yes, in practice, I think pretty much any unit can turn up anywhere (except perhaps Pacers); i've seen 150s on Portmouth-Cardiff services on numerous occasions, for instance.

158763 was earlier covering a 150 diagram and destined to finish at Weymouth tonight off 2O97. A track circuit failure at Bristol Parkway during the morning peak threw everything into a tizz but I don't think 763 was affected.

With a 153 on the front/back, so a nice and slow 75mph run for the 158. Assuming the driver remembers they have a 153 of course

It's probably a good thing it's limited to 75mph, it runs early enough then. If it could run at 90mph the train would spend half the time waiting time in stations.

So it could mean that it was following diagram 1 in which case, if it follows only the remaining 2-car 158 diagrams I stand a reasonable chance of seeing it tomorrow.
I was in Gloucester last Tuesday and it seemed to be a 150 doing the 158 diagram!

Tomorrow I have worked out a schedule that potentially includes a trip to Swindon to cover the arrival of the train from Gloucester at lunchtime. So I have the above four diagrams covered.If it's on any other - 158 3 car or 150 - it's down to chance!

What happened was yesterday:-

763 was indeed destined for a Weymouth finish but ended up being reverse attached at Bristol on 2E24. When it came back on 2O97 it was detached at Westbury as the rear unit is diagrammed to do and that is why it ended up at Gloucester, now covering a 153 diagram. It started out today still in a 153 diagram which works via the Golden Valley to Swindon and Southampton then back again. If it stays in this diagram, it will end up on the Marsh tonight.

Thanks to all the contributors to this thread - I hope it hasn't been too boring for anyone reading it!

158763 turned up today at Bristol Temple Meads at around 11:33 ready to form the departure to Weymouth at 11:49. This was literally minutes after I had purchased my ticket to go to Swindon in case it had been on the Gloucester/ Cheltenham / Swindon diagram. (Which was actually 150126 in what looked like the old Centro livery without branding - is this one of the transfers as a result of the new 172s on the Snow Hill/ Moor Street routes?)

A big sigh of relief all round!!!
