While the engineering works north of Newcastle go ahead, you'll all know that East Coast divert their services via Carlisle.

Question is, what happens to the regular services that would have normally used the WCML from Carlisle to Carstairs? do the other TOC's drop services etc?

There's no reduction in service by other TOCs as far as I know.

Why do these services call at Carlisle? I'm not aware of any other diverted services calling at intermediate stops not on the normal route. E.g. Virgin don't stop at Blackburn or Kilmarnock when diverted via the S&C or G&SW. Do East Coast get a percentage of tickets sales for this? I can't imagine Virgin or TPX being too pleased about that if they do.

Its usually for Glasgow connections and to allow passengers to transfer onto TPE / Virgin services there instead of going all the way around to Edinburgh and back

They also use Carlisle for 'Crew Changes' ;)

In my experience, when booking travel between Newcastle- Edinburgh- Newcastle, as XCDriver says, Edinburgh- Berwick runs fine, then it's a bus replacement to Newcastle, don't know about services south of Newcastle.

Being honest, I'd rather the inconvenience of doubling my journey time by going via Carlisle, at least that means I don't have to change, can stay comfortable AND, if I take my laptop, can at least watch a film, beating that still though, is the scenery on the run between Carlisle and Newcastle is at least the equal of watching the North Sea from the train.

Best of all, it'll be on an HST, god knows what I'll do when I can't travel on an HST anymore (don't like the ride quality on a Class 91, and with respect to XCDriver, I can't stand Voyagers)
