Well that's the first pillar box I've seen sited between two adjacent parts of a wall! Great find B!
Image: Type G post boxCertainly interesting to see that. Great spot!Found this one whilst walking in Essex on Wednesday. Rainham post office (Essex).
In 1974 the Post Office experimented with a similar rectangular design known as Type G. This was made in traditional cast iron by the foundry of Carron Company near Falkirk, Scotland. It was an operational success, but the public disliked the "square" designs and petitioned the Post Office for a return to cylindrical boxes.

Thank you! Don't think I've ever seen one of those before. It's been nearly 20 years since I last walked along that same road @weepingwillowb !
The adjacent secure box is used by Royal Mail to drop off postal delivery loads from a van, before the on-foot postal round starts; often where a postal round is farther away from the district sorting-office.
Extra mail can be put in there for the postman to deliver. Back in the 70s such post was left in our back shed. Our local postman would call in about 0800 to refill his bag and have a cup of tea.On Station Road, Okehampton, Devon. Anyone know what the adjacent red box might be?
Brilliant back-story G!Extra mail can be put in there for the postman to deliver. Back in the 70s such post was left in our back shed. Our local postman would call in about 0800 to refill his bag and have a cup of tea.
Okehampton station, I arrived there on a class 150 Sprinter, from Exeter Central. Summer 2009, B. A delightfully surreal moment, as I felt I'd time-travelled!Very nice day out at Okehampton, Crediton, and Newton St Cyres.
