Reported today that the Dundee Heathrow route will come to an end in October.

With the Southampton and Exeter news last week, tough times for a small airline with these unprofitable routes.

They announced the end of the Dundee route months ago. It is a PSO route and the amount they were getting wasn't worth it.

Southampton's closure is more interesting, and probably related to their expansion in Jersey.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I thought Loganair were keeping Southampton and possibly even increasing service to the Channel Islands but flights from MAN to SOU and Exeter were being dropped.

They’re shutting the base at Southampton, even though they only opened it a year ago. Not sure what routes will still serve Southampton, and from where- some of the MAN-SOU flights were previously operated by an IOM-based plane.

Exeter is losing Newcastle, with just Jersey and Edinburgh left.

Exeter Loganair

Passengers at Exeter Airport have suffered a blow after an airline confirmed it is scrapping regular flights to Newcastle.

Loganair dropped the news that it was cancelling its Newcastle-Exeter services this week after a review focusing on customer demand.

A Loganair spokesperson said: “As part of our ongoing network reviews, we can confirm that our Newcastle– Exeter services has been cancelled.

"We continually review our flying programme to ensure our network reflects customer demand and supports the long-term resilience of the airline. This enables us to focus our aircraft and resources where they can deliver the greatest benefit for customers and the communities we serve.

My wife and I flew easyJet Luton to Aberdeen a couple of years ago on an Airbus 319 is that not a similar distance SOU-NCL?
The distance is not the issue but the market and costs involved.

Would anyone pick this route up?

NCL to SOU, Easyjet perhaps?
I think if easyJet thought they could make money on it they’d already be doing it.

But the train service from Newcastle to Southampton leaves a lot to be desired
3tph from Newcastle to London then on to SWR? It’s about as easy as you’d ever get long distance travel to be.

Disappointing, I made use of the Newcastle - Exeter service (yes yes i know there's plenty of CrossCountry but it was a much quicker way to get there). However not entirely surprising. The times I used it on Friday it was never exactly busy. With fuel costs being what they are I'm not surprised that Loganair have had to knock it on the head.

It feels like more generally that Loganair are going through a phase of retrenchment? Lots of routes going in the bin at the moment it feels like.

Almost certainly due to the high fuel costs that you mention. It doesn't take much to turn a slightly profitable route into an absolute financial basket case.

And you have to change trains twice or 3 times, as the journey with only 1 change takes over 6 hours. It means a change onto the tube at Kings Cross, where the underground station is vast, and then back up from the tube at Waterloo onto another train. How is that easy?

Newcastle airport is small, convenient, a direct Metro ride to the airport from the city centre. Southampton airport is small, and the railway station is next to it. The flight time is just over an hour.

It's faster to drive.

It will be easier to fly from Newcastle to Amsterdam and then from Amsterdam to Southampton.

It will be easier to fly from Newcastle [NCL] to Amsterdam [AMS] and then from Amsterdam to Southampton [SOU].
And more likely to be profitable for the airline, since there are likely to be many more people travelling NCL-AMS and AMS-SOU than there will be travelling NCL-SOU.

When ever I have looked at going from say GLA to SOU via AMS, the fares are really high, almost if there is no fare set for this routing. Same with KLM same day returns.

Why would you do that when you can fly direct from GLA-SOU on Easyjet for a reasonable fare ?
