Great shots! What locations are they at?
1981: Wimbledon, adjacent to the West Yard. Incoming brand new 508's needed space on Wimbledon depot, so over a number of months redundant 405's (SUB's) were moved elsewhere for storage. This example is one STP weekend that I diagrammed which included the move of a number of SUB's to Wimbledon West Yard for temporary storage. You may detect a familiar theme here with those contributing to the 701 threads!

2025: Woking Up Yard, which is still visited regularly by class 20's (never heard of in my teenage spotting years) and 37's, which were a regular staple on oil tank trains back in the day.

Brilliant, thank you!

The latest RAIL magazine has just dropped and has an item about the 99s set to be ordered for the Sleeper. The expectation is for 13x additional 99s, which would have electric train supply (unlike the first 20x 99s), possibly also 100mph top speed and each Highland sleeper would have one 99 run all the way from Euston-Inverness. The 92s, 73/9s and 66s will be withdrawn/cascaded elsewhere.

Could class 73s have the diesel engine replaced with a battery for the general work they do other than the sleeper work? That would keep some of the versatility, though would there also be a weight and potentially an RA penalty? Or fit shoes to class 93s given they seem to currently be a solution looking for a problem (though RA7 might be prohibitive).

So a total of 33 class 99s ?.

No chance any sort of Frankenstein 3rd rail loco could be pieced together from a modern EMU considering the amount of computerisation and software that goes into modern stock.

You can't even couple a 377 with a 387 or 379 without the software going crazy , no chance it would accept being Frankensteined into some sort of loco.

The last chance for making some sort of Frankenstein loco was from the now withdrawn Class 455 as they weren't nearly as computerised as anything modern but that boat has now sailed (no idea how computerised networkers are so I guess that could be a possibility) but I presume if any new 3rd rail loco is to come in to being it should have to be new build.
You can couple a 377 to a 387 and Southern frequently do for ECS moves. The issue is that the CCTV doesnt display from the other set so they cant be used under DOO/DCO operation that all the Southern 8/12 car diagrams use.
There's several videos on you tube including this one showing how straightforward the coupling is:
