Ember coaches causing chaos at the airport due to arriving ahead of schedule and blocking stances. Already damaged a shelter at the airport and a Stagecoach 747
About time there is a Bus Station created at the airport now. The coach stances have been used a few times for this purpose.

Took the 08:18 service this morning. Didn't have many people booked in advance but it ended up being over half full with last minute bookings - mostly tourists. Got into Glasgow 10 minutes early. Pretty good journey!
I took a mid morning E20 to Edinburgh Airport and there was only 2 of us onboard. We only stopped at Livingston Deer Park. I noticed the driver telling Americans who got off the inbound service to book online next time.

Is that the only driver moaning then? none of the other drivers are moaning at people to book from Livingston Bus stance.

The driver wasn't moaning, he was being helpful. They would of boarded at Edinburgh Airport. Its the same with Flixbus too, you have to buy online, overseas tourists won't always know that.

I was able to get on Flixbus multiple times without a booking, perhaps it's only the 090 or Scottish routes in general.

Ember don't require you to book at certain main stops but do require you to book at intermediate stops. If no one books them they will go right pass. I tracked an E19 on their map and it did not pass St Johns in Livingston as no one booked it. Deer Park is a prebooked stop according to the map.

This is where we heading down a rabbit hole of were you have to book and don't book etc etc etc for certain stops, Ember is playing fast and lose with "bus services" let along "Coach services"

Yes, that’s how most of them are running empty, especially every 20 mins at 2am.
I don't think the loadings on the overnight E19s are anything to do with pre-booking, or not. There is minimal demand at that time. They do seem to pick up a handful of passengers on some of the very early morning airport runs. I don't know if it's more people using the airport or working there.

I took the E20 to Deer Park from Glasgow last week. Smart, efficient service and cost me £3.10. 10 minutes quicker than the train door to door. Around 10 people on board at 4pm on a Friday. It'll be my way of getting to Glasgow while it lasts - saves me time and money compared to the train.

At Buchanan Bus Station all of the Edinburgh Airport signage directs you towards the Citylink services. Ember has an excellent product but they do need to find ways to let people know about it.

I think you’d be surprised how well the E20 in particular is picking up over the last few weeks with a lot of busier services. The E19 will always take time to build demand but in reality this is the perfect feeder between Livingston and Edinburgh Airport for the busier E20 route.

We also don't know embers workings, how much it costs them to operate these routes, and how much they're happy to lose for a holistic approach. Their 24/7 buses are genuinely a lifesaver and small things like that do unbelievable things for brand loyalty and image that is almost impossible to simply buy

It's running every hour and 20 minutes from early morning on Christmas Day as well, Wonder if Citylink will take NECs on Christmas Day this year they started taking them on New Year's Day this year, Prices on Citylink on Christmas day is a shambles as well considering there's competition running on those days offering a far cheaper alternative

Looking at tre bookings hours/days in advance isn't a reliable way to tell whether they're busy or not since there's so many last minute bookings.

They sound to have healthy loads on many routes.
And yes, you would be lucky to find one which isn't full on a Saturday daytime going from Dundee to Edinburgh for instance.

Is the E19 really a feeder for the E20? The E20 already stops at Deer Park. I think others suggested it was a depot run which also attracted some rebate. This would make more sense to me with any numbers of passengers being a bonus. I would love them to turn the E19 into a connecting service at Ingliston for other parts of Scotland (and actually dropping off at the P&R stop on the inbound would be good). I also wonder if there might be a small improvement when they finally finish the works on the A899 which means a return journey from Ladywell and Knightsbridge becomes possible again.

Agreed, although we know their private hire rates. For 8 hours they charge £780. Doing some loose math, ignoring diagrams and time for breaks etc: if that were 6 single E20 journeys then that would work out to £130 per single journey. At their original fare of £7.55 they would need 18 passengers on average to attract the same revenue as their private hire. If they genuinely break even somewhere in that region then there is some serious potential in their model.

It sounded like more of a complaint about the entire company, not just the E19.

They do, and the Dundee routes are good examples of that. Inverness to Edinburgh journeys always seem to be well booked too.

Agreed. To get a feel for the E20 I look at bookings for journeys heading east from Deer Park that have already left Glasgow, and Chapelhall westbound. It's 9.40am on a Tuesday and currently there are 7 passengers on 2 services eastbound and 25 people on 2 services westbound.

I really want Ember to succeed and that's behind my grumbles at their marketing - I just think they could be doing more there. As someone who usually drives or takes the train I have started to use their services. I spend the weekend away a lot in different places in Scotland - usually walking and camping - and getting back from anywhere north of Stirling on Sunday can be challenging. Citylink prices were historically eyewatering and few services near places I wanted to go at times that suited me. Ember are starting to give me more options.

They keep saying they are a tech company that just so happens to run coach services, its very annoying they will NOT do basic things you would expect from a coach and bus service. Yes sometimes the best marketing is word of mouth etc it going to take 10-20 year to convert all people to this pre book type system. I can tell you that there is still plenty of Turn up and go passengers. Just as Megabus and National express on the london overnights..

Do they keep saying that?
On the home page of their website they seem to talk mostly about the passenger experience.

I have found coach services have become less turn up and go over the last decade. I remember you could buy a day return on Citylink to Dundee or Aberdeen. Try turning up last minute for a National Express ( Sold out perhaps) or Flixbus (Sold out or high price).

Ember is pretty good that the price does not change even if booked ten minutes before departure.

Ember don't really do advertising I have noticed.

I think the pricing is dependent on whether the coach operator is national or regional, basically all NatEx services are between smaller cities to London or Birmingham and Flixbus has a slightly stronger corridor in the north, but both Citylink/Ember run regional services that also act as local services to an extent (e.g. Highland-Glasgow, Dundee-Aberdeen via Braemar)

I'm not the only one that has pointed that out in this thread. It's also been highlighted people with knowledge in coaches can't even get thier foot in the door in management level with Ember.

They even said it from the first year they started running: https://www.route-one.net/features/passenger-focus-with-tech-at-its-heart-ember/

Ember takes a tech start-up approach to running coach services. routeone visits its Edinburgh head office to learn how technology is improving the passenger experience and relising modal shift

Even the job adverts say this..

Ember is a tech company, not a traditional bus operator. We've built a platform that coordinates our entire operation –

Does it mean it all bad: Short answer is NO, but still there lacking in basic information isn't helpful. I think many of us would be happier if they was marriage between the two concepts.

Souter used to say the same about Flixbus (as a compliment). Flixbus have done OK despite having bad customer service. Whereas Ember is too good to be true. You'd think something will have to give at some point.
