Hey guys, I received a response asking for more details regarding the times of my purchase, arrival and awareness of the delay, is that normal?

Yes, it would be helpful to see the exact wording of what has been sent to you (ref post #30 from @speedy1 ).

I suspect they might be trying to work out if the delay concerned entitled you to use different trains etc with existing ticket, which if so might actually help minimise the sum they want from you in any settlement offer.

I don't think you can just 'not reply' to that because they already have enough on you to eventually prosecute if you don't co-operate and the key to not being prosecuted is to co-operate.
I'm not sure per se how this info would incriminate you further given they presumably caught you having already committed an offence at the point the inspector checked your ticket and you probably told them / admitted when asked that the ticket did not reflect your correct boarding station and full journey that day.

if you are not sure on the specifics of the delay now some time has passed, people here might be able to check the train running time on past train running data sites but would need the date (11 Sept by look of it?) and time of day to find the specific train running info for you.
Presume you knew about the delay off some sort of train live departure info you typically use eg National Rail website?

Here's what I got:

To assist us with out investigations, and help us to decide how to proceed, please can you answer the following points:

You state "On Friday the 11th of September, I purchased a ticket from Marsden to Leeds, intending to travel via that route." Please advise when you purchased the ticket and where you were when you purchased the ticket? Which train from Marsden were you intending to catch at the time you purchased your ticket?

You state "However I was told the train via Greenfield had been delayed and therefore had a chance to board.". Please advise when you became aware of this information and at what point you decided to alter your plans and start your journey at Greenfield station instead of Marsden station?

Please can you also advise at what time you arrived at Greenfield station, after having decided to alter your plans and start your journey at that station?

I got a notification about the delay from my phone yes. Specific timings that I'm aware of: I purchased the ticket at around 8:19 am intending to board the 8:30 MSN to LDS, was en route to Marsden via a670 got notified and then rerouted and reached Greenfield at about 8:22 ish? It's a bit difficult to pinpoint the exact minute here since it was 2 weeks ago now

The letter has been deleted now but the story is implausible and ill-advised, and in any case deviated from what we were told from the outset was true. Remember they have the OP's address and will infer from that which station they travel from.

The letter from the train company questioning the events is no longer on the thread, I'm not sure where it has gone.

So how does OP get a settlement figure out of them?
presumably the approach would be to apologise in a more general way for not travelling without a valid ticket (without seeking to offer an explanation / reason or excuse ) and seek a settlement via continuing to request one.

Or if the story is in fact true provide the info being asked for in a co-operative manner

While I wouldn't disagree with your conclusion (the OP's story does have some serious holes in it) I'm not sure that there was a letter from the railway other than the initial letter we've been shown at post #24, and the letter referenced in #29 which we haven't yet seen.

The OP definitely posted some paragraphs of the questioning of the events, presumably from an email. I saw it a short while ago. The post is not showing now as per what AlterEgo wrote

As I've said, there was, and it has been removed from the thread. It was poking holes in the OP's story and querying the whens and hows.

The OP lives closer to Greenfield. Greenfield and Marsden are a 15 minute drive apart from one another and if you're on time driving to Marsden then there is no reason to divert and go to the much more expensive station which also involves paying for an expensive ticket. Why do that? Just keep driving to Marsden, it isn't like you're going to miss it.

Naturally they've always taken the train from Greenfield until they noticed it was cheaper from Marsden, and of course there is no record of any parking or ever having been at Marsden station because someone else drops them off, a true classic of the genre. They don't even contest that they'll have to pay for the 25 times they've done it.

Just write back admitting what you've been up to and they'll settle for roughly the amount you were happy to settle for in Post 22.

Not invariably:
I normally get a drop off/pick up via taxi or family
While trying to be respectful to the OP, the Idea that it makes sense to get a taxi to save something on a train fare is hard to believe.
