Do we have any indication of what the fault or symptoms were with the direction switch ?
OTMR downloads should be able to pin point at what point and why the brake application was made along with if the fault was momentary with only a brief rise then fall in brake pressure or unit brought to a complete stand ?
Not sure I agree. Every year on public roads we take our vehicles for an MOT test after three years old. The MOT inspectors have checklists of stuff and foibles wouldn't be included.
Whether there should or shouldn’t was not my point. Someone coming new to something (it’s not the thing that is new, but their interaction with it) is more likely to see something as a (potential) major difficulty than someone who has been interacting with that something for years and has got inured to its “little ways”.
That’s not a value judgment on the particular issue with the 175 sunflowers (familiarity breeding contempt is itself a safety issue) but may explain why it’s now “a problem” when it wasn’t before.
Equally isn’t luminous paint another example of something where the modern, safer, product is less effective than its predecessors?
The first 175 in public service was the middle of December, the longest night not far off. Why wasn't the sunflower problem picked up then?
There's something else going on with the management, unions, train crew. How did the first 175s operate Newquay as it would be getting dark round 4pm?

112 doing Plymouth- Paignton-Exeter-Plymouth. 113 doesn't look like it left the depot and a 2 car 158 is on the key 2Co5 diagram.
Direction switch faults extremely rare, it was mostly a system that was activated or energised or vise versa by the direction switch which could cause a problem ?
I wonder if GWR have now bared their teeth and told Wolverton that they will not accept a transfer if there is even a hint of any type of fault on the unit, no matter how small, where as in the past they may have accepted some faults with a view to rectifying them once they receive the unit but to GWRs detriment in the long run ?

You would certainly think that it would be prudent and sensible to do so considering on how much work may have been carried out during their stay at Wolverton, not to mention the time in storage that could/probably have caused issues.

It feels rather like GWR were naïve when they took the units on and/or hadn't done their due diligence on condition. With the fault free running requirement, plus whatever conditions they have imposed on Angel and Wolverton, maybe they have learnt...
There have been occasional rumours circulating suggesting that some 175 parts are in short supply ? We did, at times, have some temporary supply issues and in the main overcome them by using a "rolling rob" procedure between units. Not ideal !
Could the lack of supply of some parts be more than temporary and 106, 107, 108 have been robbed of parts to service other units ? If so I hope that they have put in a decent tracking system to what has been robbed and to which units robbed parts ended up on. When we had long term stopped units or individual cars a tracking system was essential for the amount of parts that could have been potentially robbed as if not it would certainly have caused issues replacing the robbed parts to the donors as its not always obvious to what may have been robbed !
Can only guess. 005 came by road to Wolverton. I presume because of it's condition. Maybe 104 is the same. It is also reported maybe somewhere on this thread or another site that half of 008 also came by road. Ely Papworth is also reported to be closing.
A video dated 5 May 2026 shows 005 and 104 alongside each other. 005 went to Wolverton 1 July 2026. On the other side of the the sidings is half a 175 which must be 008.
I did take snips but I get into trouble here with the admin if I post things so go to youtube and seek out

Just watched the video on youtube and both the 180s and 175s have tarpaulin covering the roof sections above the gangways which also stretches across and above the electrical cupboards which I have my suspicions as to why they have done that but I don`t understand why they haven`t also done the same above the cab electrical cupboards ?
Also what are the notices affixed to the inside of the cab windscreens, non multi signs ? one of them on 104 looks like its fell off onto the top of the desk. Is it the possible the non multi scenario was the reason 005 was transported to Wolverton and will 104 have to be also ?
The scorch marks are still visible on the outside of 008 and all the underframe equipment apart from the bogies appears to have been removed, the engine raft was initially removed for investigation.
To reiterate, the 2 modified sets are due to head to Laira on Sept 24th.
Also of note, the set at Long Rock is to be sent back to Wolverton as it is basically useless.
