Does anyone know what is hauling 45212 today and why 37669 and 47813 double headed on the return leg of yesterday’s Scarborough Spa Express please? Thank you in advance

I would imagine it saved having to run round with 813, and made things easier at Carnforth on the return, for propelling the stock back into Steamtown.

Has the Weardale Explorer next Saturday (12th) been postponed?
No timings up yet, and when you click to book it directs you to a train on the 10th of April next year, but still says the 12th everywhere else on the website.

37 + 47 pairing (685 and 812 quoted on WNXX) on Thursday's Dalesman, but steam haulage reported on Nat Pres.

There was (yet more) rain in Carlisle when I left earlier.

Believe either low bookings or it wasn't allowed on the line as they have weight restrictions
Steam engines have been up the Yorkshire Coast line before (2014 and 2016), so if it was weight restrictions around here has something changed? I was quite surprised to see it still on the RTC website Saturday and assumed it was running. However a post on a local Facebook group, and the fact that it wasn't in RTT led me to realise it was cancelled. Quite a few people locally were going to watch it. Leaving Bempton going north there are some good open views of the railway from public roads, so a shame.

I think the weight restriction has been removed, was part of the reason 20s were used on York RHTT circuits.

That would be incorrect. Class 37s are still in use on RHTT trains on the line due to weight restrictions.

The steam operators' problems are well encapsulated here.

1. Price of coal that potentially creates fire risks.

2. Lack of enough patrons to buy tickets at economic prices to pay for the coal and cover all the other costs of operation.

3. Inability to monetise all the enthusiasts of all types along the route the train takes.

I'd considered booking on this train but was a little late. It still appeared to be on sale on RTC's website but when I tried to reserve seats the page went blank. As far as I could tell there was low marketing effort to sell boarding at Hathersage or Sheffield.

Although I have seen Class 66's on engineering trains.

Fire risk problem has receeded with recent rain, locally everywhere has greened up nicely.

This must be a problem for all heritage operations. I am not sure how you address it. I have often wondered if a smaller scale operations may be an answer/possible, e.g. run a York - Scarborough shuttle, the problem with all day tours is the cost and the fact that if they dont pick up in your locallity they are not viable. The reason I highlight York - Scarborough is that its a double track line with 1 tph, and there is a turntable at Scarborough, however not sure how you would turn an engine at York.

There is also a problem with the Yorkshire Coast line, the long single track section between Bridlington and Hunmanby. The last time a steam special ran the normal service was roughly every 90/120 minutes, so room to path the extra through.

The current service is hourly both ways, the northbound Scarborough service leaves Bridlington at roughly XX:03, arrives at Hunmanby at about XX:21. It passes the southbound Sheffield service there, which heads south arriving in Bridlington at around XX:38, so that only leaves 25 minutes to path the rail tour through. so I wonder if it was just not feasible to follow the route proposed.

34067 failed with a hot box at Hellifield - being returned to Carnforth by 47804. 37706 remains on The Dalesman.

What was supposed to be the first Steam working up North after the 2 month steam ban saw me go to Hellifield to see 34067 Tangmere take over the Dalesman tour to Carlisle, sadly after being dragged to Hellifield by 47804 it was declared a failure due to a hot box.
47804 arrives at Hellifield from Carnforth with 34067 Tangmere to work 'The Dalesman' to Carlisle and back later in the day

34067 Tangmere at Hellifield to work 'The Dalesman' to Carlisle and back later in the day

34067 Tangmere in the goods loop at Hellifield with 37706 arriving with the tour

37706 at Hellifield with 'The Dalesman' 34067 Tangmere now declared a failure due to a hotbox now diesel operated throughout

47804 moving into Hellifield station and will attach onto the front of failed 34067 Tangmere passing 37706
