Is it really "quite a few steps back" for "English cricket"?

It seems to me that all these "incidents" around the England team have been relatively minor, if really anything at all. But the media and social media is pouncing on anything.

On the other hand during this century we have had a former England cricketer jailed for cocaine smuggling, another professional player convicted of rape and another who died on railway tracks fleeing the police and was found to have been a habitual cocaine user. The latter which almost certainly reflected a wider culture of hedonism among certain team-mates.

Also something which has had relatively little attention is a serious allegation involving a former England player allegedly spiking women's drinks.

Flippin awful in my experience. Comfortably (more accurately - uncomfortably) the worst of the test Grounds I have been to in England & Wales, which is all of them except the Rose Bowl.

Awful experience when I went to Old Trafford - won't be going back. Horrible, just horrible. Never had an issue at the other Test Grounds I've been to (Trent Bridge, Lords, The Oval and the Rose Bowl), whether it's been for an international or domestic game.

Giving The Rose Bowl an Ashes Test is the problem, a soulless, hard to access (by public transport) ground, distorting the geographical balance. London correctly has 2 Ashes Tests, both because of the massive population of London, but also because it's so accessible for most of SE England. Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and indeed Hampshire.

I guess the ECB argument is that it's to give thanks for the cricket they hosted in lockdown in 2020.

I’m a traditionalist and in my head there are six Ashes tests and they’re played at Old Trafford, Headingley, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, Lord’s and the Oval. A good geographic spread

But times change and I suppose the Utilita Bowl makes some sense because of where it is and that it holds 25,000 (fourth equal biggest), albeit it’s a bugger to get to.

So once that’s chosen, and grudgingly accepting only five tests and two in London, choosing both midlands grounds rather than one of them and one in the north is a baffling mess. Trent Bridge only holds 17,500 so it isn’t being played there for the gate receipts. (Old Trafford holds about 26,000 by comparison)

In the Test Match series between India and Sri Lanka, there was a good example of steady late-order batting by the Indian wicketkeeper, Dhruv Jurel who proceeded whilst batting at number 7 to score 115 not out with 2 x 6 and 9 x 4 which enabled India to declare at a healthy score of 503-9 declared.

In the 2nd innings of Sri Lanka in response, Sonal Dinusha batting at number 6 showed a thoughtful style of batting to ensure his side saw the match through to its end and a drawn result by scoring 133 not out to enable Sri Lanka to a total of 429-9 in the 2nd innings.

No they are no longer allowed in county matches. I think one of the reasons they were eventually banned was abuse of the rules. Umpires had difficulty determining whether the batsman was genuinely injured, or just trying it on when feeling tired, after a hard day in the field. That aside, there have been some hilarious mixups between batsman and runner leading to run outs, which were amusing to watch.
