Can anyone identify this 153 inside Crewe Carriage Shed

Hi,

Going past Arriva Train Care / Crewe Carriage Shed on 10th August, next to 170105, there is something else clearly undergoing major work. I can't even work out what class it is. My first thought was boxy 153-ish but the bottom is wrong. The bottom looks more 158ish but the sides don't have the slope. I wondered if it might be a 350. Does anyone know what it is, class and identity? Best photo I could manage sorry!

I don't know why but I have a gut feeling it's a Sprinter.

Although it seems quite wide at the top.

I would strongly say that is a small end cab of a 153, the cab windows being rather high up is the giveaway.

That was my confusion. It's like a 153 with a bit of 158 bottom curvature

It’s a class 153. If you google 153374 it shows a partially stripped shell. you can see similar features

It can either be a TfW one or a Network Rail one and the NR ones tend to be done at Long Marston, so I'd guess it's a TfW one going through overhaul perhaps?

Would that be corrosion checking/fixing that means it got stripped so much? I've been looking for info on fleet status and havent managed to ID it.

A class 153 is said to be replacing Network Rail Class 150 950001. It might well be that.

All the 153/3 vehicles of the Active Travel units have been through Crewe ATC for heavy exams/overhauls. 153312, the spare vehicle is currently there for the same work so seems a good chance of it being that.

Looks to me like Northern's 158910 if you mean the unit on the left of the photo

Thanks all. 312 seems likely then but I'm not going to count it unless I can get positive confirmation. I cant see anything to suggest 158910 specifically. What makes you think that? It looks more like a 153, unless you know something about the current status of 910?

100% agree it's a 153, can tell by the angles of the roof and shape of the cab.

The only 153 i've got at LNWR Crewe is 312, so i would think that is the one.

I would suggest people look at the picture more closely. On the left hand side is a view through the doorway on Track 14 where the bodyside of the mystery vehicle can be seen: it is surely a 170. And the the yellow above the cab window does not extend to the roofline but meets a grey painted area of the roof end dome: again, looks like a 170. Thoughts?

The vehicle on the right of the photo provided by the OP is a 170 and described as such. We are talking about the vehicle on the left, which is clearly not a 170 - it obviously has a cab end gangway for starters.

Mea culpa, that is so heavily stripped I didn't recognise it as being a train!

Below the missing light cluster there appears to be a white patch, possibly with "text" on it. Is that a trick of the light or is it a temporary identification sign? Someone with serious image enhancement software might be able to answer.
