On the GTR network most of the screens seem to be out of service, except for ones that the platform staff use , like at Sutton. Has anywhere in the country kept the old method or is it all in cab monitors now?
South Eastern.
707s and 377s have bodyside cameras and in-cab monitors, but everything else doesn't.
You also sometimes see drivers stopping mid platform and hanging out of the window to check platforms. more convenient for passengers but? This is with 2/3 car trains. this between Amersham and Ricky SB where the curves go the right way.Chiltern use a DOO mirror, rated to various train lengths, south of Banbury / over the Met line from AVP to Harrow or DOO monitors screens, placed in banks to allow for different stopping places, like the mirrors.
The 196 units will have body side cameras for DOO use.

Yes, but there are still requirements to fulfill.Look back is still an approved method for Chiltern DOO at a number of Met stations.
Yes, Class 357s use the platform-side equipment on North Thameside (as it was called in BR days)/Essex Thameside/the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway, rather than having train-mounted cameras and in-cab monitors.Think c2c does for the 357s?
One station, Slough is full dispatch by platform staff for all GWR services. Of course they have to look backwards to the dispatcher… but you get the point.I think there are a few stations where "look back" is the only method. Fairly sure this is (or was) the case on the Windsor branch? Though that of course only has the two stations.

Just out of interest, where did the 170s operate DOO?They seem so old fashioned nowadays compared to in-cab TMS operated cameras. Those dreadful mirrors too. I used to prefer to look back but then we only operated DOO with a single 3-car 170. I used to pity drivers of 8/12-car units especially on sunny days.
Between Ipswich & Liverpool Street on the then alternate through services from Lowestoft/Peterborough. Nice idea bu a total waste of scarce DMU recourses at the time. DOO was only permitted on single units. Trains like the combined 07:05 ex-Yarmouth/06:44 ex-Lowestoft ‘The East Anglian’ had to have a guard rostered too.Just out of interest, where did the 170s operate DOO?
I do not know if there is any booked stopper between Oxford / Didcot and Reading booked to be Turbo to be honest .
There are mirrors too on the Maidenhead to Marlow branch although not at Marlow. There's always two crew members running to Marlow. The Guard used to inspect tickets, but perhaps not any more as Marlow now has a ticket machine, a contactless reader and penalty fare notices. The branch is still operated by 165s.Regularly, in GWR land Turbo services use mirrors
