And that refurbishment seems to be purely cosmetic, from the evidence of the only refurbished unit in service being just as unreliable as the rest.

Up to and including the 1315 departure from St Pancras they had the excuse 'problem with the overhead wires' but after that it was 'problem with the train'
However, the 1445 departure did run, and despite being about half an hour late, ran through to Corby.
This looks like the only train to run today, and seems on the face bizarre (and pretty well useless). Was it to achieve some Key Performance Indicator? So that EMR aren't accused of giving up totally on Corby?
This low availability of 360s (20 sets, managed between them one round trip of about 3 hours) must be a record. I'm sure even NBL Type 2s managed better.
I actually got 109 from Luton to STP on a rather delayed 11:55-ish, so something was definitely running earlier

I know that there is action short of a strike this week and I get the feeling I may have already experienced it (on arrival at stp we had a 3mph speed from platform entry to buffer...)
Could this be impacting the service provided in any way? (I will never complain about safety related issues, especially with what's happened the last 2 days...)

To be fair my assessment was based on Down trains that actually arrived at Corby. A few trains flaked out en route and seemed to have been resuscitated and returned directly South. The first 3 Up trains left Corby never to return.
Still a sad situation in my opinion; very poor service to a new station opened not that long ago, and the more recent re-doubling and electrifying the route to it.

No idea im afraid, Thameslink only stable units on Cauldwell. No maintenance takes place on the 700's at Bedford.

Pretty sure it's the other way around, 113 only went to Northampton last week, whereas 108 had been there for over a month.

360108 has just expired at Kettering on an Up Corby 'problem with the train' - it was solo.

360108 has not been refurbished.
Was also held at Luton Airport Parkway earlier (1H06) for a train fault.

No, but it spent a month at Siemens, Northampton and has just come back, according to the posts above.
The usual reason/excuse for their unreliability is the difficulty of moving them to Northampton for heavier maintenance. Unfortunate that one spends a month there and failed almost immediately after it's returned.
From the failure rate of the refurbished ones - indistinguishable from those not - one might deduce that the refurbishment is cosmetic interior only. But even that takes months.

Monday 17/6 16.00 360108 and 360116 have just failed at Corby - although obviously not necessarily the fault of '108.

How do people know, out of curiosity? When is this expected to happen?
It's been proposed internally as an option for the unit for a while. Was confirmed as likely to be departing the other week. Annoying really, actually having some luggage space is quite helpful.

Surprised they are doing that - it isn't as if EMR have enough units to run their own service and frequently have short forms.
It's been on the cards for a while and it's been talked about heavily, internally

And the declassified first class too!
I guess if it going it removes what would have been an added complication in the refurbishment programme and a replacement 158 could be sourced which has same layout to the rest of the 158 fleet which means a uniform fleet of 26 which again makes refurbishment easier.
It has technically been sub-leased all this time, so returning it removes the contractual complications
That finished with the end of the South West Trains franchise in 2017 or so, the lease formally transferred to EMT then.

There's an excess of units above and beyond what is required, hence it going.

I guess that’s what required by the operator.
Not so much what’s required by the passengers on the busiest EMR services I guess…
For those not on X it seems to be reporting that SWR are expecting a 158 from EMR (though I could only see a bit without logging in)

It's most likely more due to the fact that the whole fleet is stretched too thin and reliability is down the drain.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't 158889 technically finally going back home considering it came from what is now SWR in the first place due to East Midlands Trains (or whatever they were called back then) being short of units at the time.
Also with the refurbishments going on at the moment wouldn't it have took longer to refurbish 158889 if they had kept it considering it was the only unit with the original 158 seating in the fleet and also I'm sure there was talk of getting rid of the declassified first class section.
