No, it is named after the village near to where the King had a Welsh residence.

Yes, that was the reason given, but the village is far more notable for its role in the history of Wales and the Kingdom of Deheubarth in particular, as well as being the setting for one of the several 'Lady of the Lake' myths, such as that enshrined in Arthurian legend by Thomas Mallory. So for me it's a good name for a Welsh train anyway.

Unusually though, the 398s have both the unit number and the vehicle number displayed in the passenger saloons of each coach, so at least if you're on the train, you know which one it is!

I heard another (I am fairly sure non enthusiast) passenger commenting to the guard today on how nice the new trains were.

They are a bit basic but overall they seem to be going down fairly well.

Anyway another day with all three diagrams run with 398s, though it looks from Realtimetrains as if there was a failure leading to some cancellations in the afternoon.

398019 is on Merthyr platform currently. Only thing I am noticing is at peak times, they are interfering with timetabled services IF the timetabled service is slightly delayed. However, they have no choice really have to be tested and training needs going on

Looks like 3 out today again, 029, 030 and 031, which will satisfy those who like consecutive numbers!

Doesn't look like anything is due out in service tomorrow now so presumably the plan has changed again, or I misread it initially.

Here's a 398 today with the photo taken looking across the Taff just above Radyr Weir.

What a stunning photo! And it really shows how perfect the colours are in this setting.

Thank you. Unfortunately the sun had just gone in, otherwise there would have been a rather nice reflection from the river.

Subject to change but we could see a Class 398 on the TAM in only a few weeks time!
Well spotted. Fingers crossed.

How soon before another 398 gets passed for passenger service ?.
(last new entrant I have is 18/08/2026 (last Wednesday).

Many of those 4 coach services did use very short Pacers though.

True. I'm sure someone here knows how the capacity of a 4 car Pacer compares to a single 398 but it isn't me.

Certainly two 150s together was a rare sight.

Does looks like they are starting to slowly talk about the rollout in public. Just seen the a small peice with the local Rhondda MP talking to someone from TfW at Treorchy, showing the new toilet facilities there and saying we'll be seeing the 398s on the Rhondda line soon. No idea what soon is, and it was a fluff peice with the MP, so normally I wouldnt think much of it, but that is more press than theyve done about anything for the 398s recently!

The Rhondda line has been talked about for quite a while as the next stage of the 398 rollout, so this checks out. The stations are very close together so the brisk acceleration on the 398s will make a big difference here.

How many units does the current 2tph to treherbert require? Assuming we've got a solid supply of the 3 for the Bay to pontypridd services.

Essentially do we have enough units that have been in service to cover them all.

I believe it needs four, based on the trains allocated to it today.

But bear in mind that you may need double units to handle the loading at peak times.

I really like the 398s, and have to say, returning to Cardiff for a bit of work after leaving uni there in 2024, using the Valleys line services is a lot more pleasant now.

(Image shows a 398 and two 756s lined up at Cardiff Queen St)

Nice line up of 398028 Myddfai, 756110 and an unidentified 756 at Cardiff Queen Street :)
