Also saw an R reg Mazda pick-up the other day

No photo unfortunately but I spotted a MK1 (1983-1992) Nissan Micra yesterday, definitely one for the Festival of the Unexceptional.

Saw a second generation (1992-2003) Micra in an M42 service station yesterday, didn't notice the reg as I was astounded by the black paint job with pink bonnet and front wings, the loud boys exhaust was an obvious accompaniment

I have seen a few second gen Micras around - they must be very reliable!
I had a K11 Micra on an L plate. It was fairly reliable but, having spent all of its life by the sea, corrosion was a bit of an issue. I'd have another one in a heartbeat if I had the chance, although I'd maybe go for the 1.3 rather than the 1.0l.

Even the ones that didn't live by the sea have mostly succumbed to tinworm - the inner arches were particularly susceptible and easily missed until it came to MOT time.

That's where mine rusted - at first glance the car in my photo doesn't look too bad, but if you zoom in you'll see it showing around the front wheel arch. I had to replace the clutch fairly soon after I bought it, but I only paid £300 for the car and it probably saved me more than that amount in bus fares in the time that I had it. It was a great wee car to drive.

I'd probably have kept it for a while longer but my dad upgraded his car and donated his old Citroen Xsara (to the left of the photo), so poor old Lucy went for scrap. :(

The sills were a weak point too, on the sunroof models the drains from that run into the sills, causing water to pool and cause rot. On later cars, they were better rust protected as can be seen by the thick grey band around the lowerside, but they still weren't great. On mine, I'm trying to mitigate the sunroof issue by having a magnetic sheet over the sunroof area to stop water getting down, and I reckon it looks quite cool haha. All good for the minute, touch wood.

My late wife had a 1993 1.3 "Super S" from new, still in very good condition 10 years later when we replaced it with a Seat Ibiza 2.0 Sport.
As @GusB says, very reliable, and good to drive. Though I would've liked a bit more than 1.3 for what was the "sporty" model to give it a little extra.
I remember getting a stone hit on one of the foglamps. The replacement cost £130 and caused much muttering.

I don't want to come over all Bobby Ewing but...
Tesco car-park yielded this rather splendid Mercedes-Benz R107 model, 1985 380SL*.
Another red R107 - a 280SL - was here just two weeks ago. Lovely "classic convertibles".

As we drove out of this car-park, we passed a glorious dark green 1968-reg VW Beetle.

* That 380SL was registered August 1985. September 1985 MB replaced the 380SL model with the 420SL - so I wonder how many 380SL cars had a C-prefix plate?

Might have seen a couple of older cars today. This one is particularly relevant to this forum...

Easily somewhere in the region of £10-£15 million worth of cars at this event!

An interesting March 1989 Range Rover in very good condition seen at Beauly Filling Station this afternoon:

I presume the Pickup is a custom variation, but someone may be able to enlighten us.

Took the present Mrs X's Morris down to the pub on Sunday and gained a rather posh neighbour. Had the exact same silver Rolls as a matchbox toy umpty ump years ago.

Your pub-goers are a more discerning class than ours!

This morning, along a local road skirting The Solent, I passed an immaculate dark maroon Jaguar E-Type on trade-plates.

Just seen from a Glasgow-Lanark train near Bellshill....an immaculate white 1950s
Austin saloon (the big curvy model with swept back splashers and rounded wings - A50?). Unfortunately I was unable to get my phone organised to photograph it before it disappeared from view.

On holiday in Madeira where cars from the 1990s and earlier are plentiful, so here are a couple of highlights.

Years since I saw one.

Lovely stuff @TheSel 8-)

A jump forward to the 1990s; and a car I've not seen since 2007 (in the same trans-Alpine charity motor rally as I).
A very presentable R-reg Vauxhall Calibra at local Sainsbury's this evening. A Cavalier in a posh frock; but the coupe looked the part.

Our local M&S car park produces another classic; this evening, it's a Karmann-built VW Golf Mk1 GTI cabriolet.
The design goes back to 1979, although this example was registered Sept 1989.

That’s a Mark II Golf in a Mark I body.

Mark I was the best.

Aside from new (Golf Mk2) engines, the underpinning of the cabrio retained Mk1 origins?

Karmann-made (Osnabrück) Golf Cabriolet evolved between 1983 (hard-top Golf Mk2's launch) and 1993 (cabrio's end-of-production). Key changes I know of were:
1983: a larger fuel tank.
1984: for the GTI, a new 1.8ltr petrol engine (90PS); the old 1.8ltr petrol engine (112PS) no longer offered.
1986: catalytic converter a (cost-option) for 1.6ltr and 1.8ltr.
1987: externally facelifted bumpers, arches, sills, rad' grille.
1989: 1.8-litre engine (carb) updated to Bosch fuel injection.
1990: soft-top gains automated lower / raise.
