I attended a one-off local event this past weekend. I have a DSLR camera and took over 70 photos. In the course of downloading to my computer I accidently deleted all the files from the memory card rather than downloading them! Is there any software people can recommend that would enable me to recover the lost JPEG files, please?

I don't myself, but I can say this:
Until you have done this ( it's called an SD card recovery ), do NOT take any more pictures using that particular card; the more recent files get over-written first following deletion.

I've had success with the free version of Piriform's Recuva software before.
Have you checked your Recycle Bin (assuming Windows) also? They might still be there if recently deleted.
(Also, endorse Peter's message above; do not do *anything* else with that SD card until you've attempted to recover the files)

Gentlemen, thanks for your replies. I am aware of the need not to use the card again. However, it seems that when deleting items in a separate bit of equipment, such as a camera, the deleted items don't go into the Recycling Bin; this appears to only happen if the file is already on the computer.
I'll see if Recuva does the trick or not.#

That's correct, because it will be deleting on the camera - therefore there is no recycle folder.
However, on the SD card the files, although deleted to you, will still be there - simply marked for over-writing.
Should have added earlier, do not reformat the card either - but I think you're already aware of that?
Indeed, but thanks. Have recovered some 90% of what I deleted, so far. The file numbering system set by the camera seems to get altered a bit. So the 10% missing may still be lurking on the card. I'll have a tea break and rest my eyes before resuming.
Thanks for the link to the Recuva software. Took several goes and got the best results after taking the card out of the camera and using an independent USB card connecting box, if you follow me! Ended up getting back 78 out of 80 photos, which I'm very pleased about - they were of the 200th anniversary celebrations yesterday of my local church. I'd have had a rather red face if I hadn't recovered them.

It might be an idea in future, and if your card/camera has the facility, to enable the "Protect" feature which prevents you from accidentally deleting in the future.
PhotoRec is excellent too (though more suited to 'geeks' familiar with the CLI), in case you wanted to try another attempt at those other 2 files
