It‘s very unusual to refurbish or replace engines and gearboxes until they fail, or at least show signs of failure. I’m not sure whether this is what is meant in respect of the Coastliner etc fleets, or whether being similar mileage, they all happened to fail in the same year (Which is possible, but a little unlikely).
It's simply so they can keep to time on such a lengthy route (with fast running) that's already way too long as it is without adding on more time for an ever slower bus lol. I remember when Coastliner borrowed a Harrogate Olimpian to cover for a college run on the 843, they had to swap it for a newer model due to the engine being so old and underperforming it couldn't keep to time.

Lol - we are in fantasy here, surely more likely to be gearbox settings or the axle ratio than the engine.

Unusual yes but good practice to get on top of a problem before it happens to more engines. They will have a new or refurbed engines under warranty which will be far more reliable than risking high mileage ones going pop.

Coastliner has announced details of the summer uplift:
We're getting ready for Summer - and to help make sure everyone can get to and from the coast as easily as possible, we'll be adding some new journeys running from Saturday 20 July to Friday 28 August.

On Monday to Friday, the bus leaving Leeds at 8.35am will run all the way to Scarborough. Coming back, there is a new departure at 4.55pm from Scarborough to Leeds.

On Saturday, the bus leaving Leeds at 8.40am will run all the way to Scarborough. Coming back, there is a new departure at 4.55pm from Scarborough to Leeds.

On Sundays, the 9.23am trip from York to Whitby will start in Leeds at 8.10am.

Download the full timetable.

There will be no other changes to times and these extra journeys will stop running after Friday 28 August.

Note that there is no Saturday 20th July 2026. Looks like its identical to the uplift from last year.

Am I missing something, or is that just one additional journey to and from Scarborough?
Yes, an extension of a Leeds-York 843 in the morning and an additional evening journey to return. Plus the 840 on a Sunday morning starting from Leeds instead of York. Same as 2025.

I've been out of the loop for a while it seems, I always thought the summer timetables were a lot more substantial

Other than 2021 when it went 30m it’s never been much more than 1 or 2 trips. 2018/2019 there was 1x X40 and 1x X43, 2016 1 am Tadcaster to Scarborough and back to Malton and 1x X40

As well as the 843 running every 30 mins, Wasn’t 2021 the year the City Sightseeing ran every 10 minutes too. There seemed a lot of waste that year - 6 PVR on the CS, 3 x B7TL’s (ZWG/H/K) repainted in Coastliner livery for the summer then reallocated and again repainted afterwards. Come to think of it I think City Zap (every 30?) might even have still been in place, with the 70 plate E400s.

Remember 2021 was still heavily effected by Covid with high numbers of people holidaying in the UK due to travel restrictions etc.

Do they still run duplicates on some of the Whitby runs over the summer?
Not usually, if they do then its unplanned. Like on May Day Bank Holiday weekend, when people were being left behind from Stonebow going to Whitby so a second bus was put on from Malton. The only planned change to Whitby services is extending the Sunday morning 840 to start in Leeds instead of York to provide an earlier journey into York from Leeds on a Sunday.

Going back a few years, the Whitby route used to get an additional X40 (running limited stop between Leeds and Malton) from Leeds to Whitby in the morning and back in the late afternoon, plus an associated short working from Whitby to Malton and back to Whitby, running 7 days a week from May to September. When the year-round service is only 4 journeys a day and 2 on Sundays, that's quite a significant uplift! But in recent years, with the exception of the one year they ran half-hourly to Scarborough (at the expense of through services to Whitby), the summer uplift has been minimal – and has been inconsistent over time, usually changing from one year to the next and without a lot of notice as to what extra services might run and over what period.

Infuriates me that TB still run their route numbers on the wrong side of the destination display, against all good practice.

That was a change made by Alex Hornby, using the logic that 'route number' goes to 'destination'.

But then you could also say you can get to 'destination' on 'route number'.

Change for the sake of change, and in this case not really for the better.

First also displays the route number before the destination (or at least sometimes because they are incompetent and the displays are inconsistent) and that makes more sense in a region where several services often share the same final destination. Take the 4/4F, 40 and 50/50A, for example. Or take the X1, 501, 537, and 343.

The route number is the main identifier. It is what passengers see first on apps, timetables and bus stop information. In that context putting the destination first is arguably the less intuitive arrangement.

It’s far clearer on the left of the display as the angle of the display can cause problems when on the right. Transdev’s destinations are far clearer than most in my opinion.

At least the route numbers are shown, there was a period where Transdev started omitting them for just ‘WitchwayBurnley’ or ValleylineClitheroe for example

I would argue that for prestige routes like the Witchway the name is known more than the number (X43) so that makes sense.

Possibly for a handful of long-standing prestige routes, or where they created a completely new route like CityZap, but they were applying names-only to all sorts of randomly selected routes, including some that had never had a name before at all – the most egregious examples I can think of were CastleLine (York to Malton via Castle Howard), OtleyDash (Otley town service) and PendleWizz (Skipton to Burnley). No reason you can't have route branding as well as the number, but when these routes didn't have a number but instead suddenly had a 9/10 letter name with two words smushed together like that, it was confusing for passengers who had known them as 81 and 965 for donkey's years (although PendleWizz had been through so many different numbers by that stage). But also, it meant that the destination display would have to alternate between the route name and the destination, instead of showing both the destination and number at the same time, and it made a mess of some travel planners that expect the route number to be ~3 characters rather than ~10.

Funnily enough despite the Witch Way brand being around for more than 20 years the majority of locals still refer to it as 'the X43'

CastleLine did gain a lot of traction, and some customers (not particularly enthusiasts) were actually sad to see it go.

It went hand-in-hand with Coastliner and worked quite well in advertising. Certainly made the service stand out more.

The new Transdev Go app provided by Passenger will launch in August:
This August, we’ll be introducing a new Transdev Go app and website, as we launch a new partnership with transport app developer Passenger.

The new app will have the features you have come to love, with easy journey planning, bus tracking and ticket purchasing. It’ll also have a few new features, including a contactless journeys portal and new ways to personalise your experience and get updates on your services.

We’re finalising the finishing touches and testing the app to ensure you have the smoothest experience.

You don’t need to do anything yet, but please keep an eye on our website over the coming weeks as we share more info about what you need to do to ensure you have a smooth transition.
Just seen 2452 heading eastbound along Skipton Road in Harrogate. Yorkshire Show shuttle perhaps?
The show doesn't start until tomorrow. It might be the empty run from Burnley to Harrogate ahead of tomorrow, probably joined by some other vehicles then.

Yes, I meant ready for the shuttle, not working on it - the shuttle doesn't go along Skipton Road.

2019 is also at Starbeck depot. Over the past year or two, the visiting vehicles have, in the main, been used on schools duties to enable to Starbus fleet to operate on Show Shuttles.
