Will be all day, 3 sets visiting Crewe ETD, HD02 there for repairs to damaged gangways, HD05 for underframe checks after hitting the obstruction last night and HD06 heading for tyre turning. 2 are planned back tomorrow so should be back to normal for Thursday.
HD05 is now back but HD07 has lost its loco to wheelflats so therell be the 4 diagrams at least for tomorrow with W11 diagram lost. No spare locos to head to Canton to replace so may be a couple of days without that diagram.

Did they really sub a MK4 with a pair of 153's (Active Travel Set) today? RTT is showing it on the 0420Cardiff and 0830 Manchester.

Wow I honestly never thought that we would see 153s going to Manchester again. It must be well over a year since the last pair went. Likely the first for an AT set too. Just as well Crewe still sign them.

I wouldnt be surprised if 1W22 is swapped to a 197 at Cardiff however.

The 08:30 from Manchester to Cardiff is a 197 today.
A step up from the 153 then.

I am not using 1W11 (which form the 08:30) until the 8th. Hopefully that gives time to get 5 out of 7 sets available for service.

I would prefer that they got a big depot to maintain the 197s and then there might be enough in service to allow 5-car on all Manchester to South Wales (or at least allow for an order), but that certainly could not be ready for the 8th.

My priority is that there are enough seats and a single 197 does not have the capacity to handle the commuter flow into Manchester that 1W11 conveys.

The loco off HD07 has been on the Crewe wheel lathe and is planned to head back to Canton today so should be back out tomorrow.
There werent any spare locos to send so the set has had to wait for it to return.

I do like it when you bring good news. Thank you.

It would be interesting to know how busy the pair of 153s were on arrival into Manchester. Given one carriage is pretty much half bike spaces.
Could sell it as better for commuters as there is more standing space.

I think I would have still got a seat at Pontypool though.

It was full and standing, and then some. Faces like thunder. It didn’t arrive until gone 8:30. I found out why when I got on. The heating was on full, and boy was it blasting out warm air.
I was waiting to catch the 8:30 return service and looking forward to that highly rated breakfast. Oh dear, never mind.
Left with a full seated load, and got busier. I had booked to Ludlow (to give me time to enjoy breakfast) but bailed out at Crewe.

Thanks for the report. It doesnt surprise me it was full and standing. Also not a hope of keeping to time with the speed of 75mph and longer dwells times. Must be very disappointing when you want to do first class/breakfast. The twice ive done it ive been lucky and it ran as a MK4 as planned. Better luck next time!

I am travelling to Sheffield tomorrow and staying until Wednesday. It is about £40 cheaper to buy a ticket 'via Shrewsbury' so i will be going via the Marches and changing at Stockport. Just have to decide whether i want a 197 or a MK4. I have to change from Swanline so it makes no difference really if I change at Port Talbot for the 197 or Cardiff for the MK4. Im looking at either the 0953 or 1053 from Cardiff. I dont think im going to upgrade this time to First Class if i end up on the 1053.

If im not in First Class id sooner a 197 over a MK4 if im totally honest. But i prefer an ex GC MK4 rather than ex LNER.

In view of the hot weather forecasted this week I guess the MK4’s will be withdrawn like the last spell of hot weather? Can anyone confirm please?

I am wondering now on Wed if they do have problems due to the hot weather if my ticket would be accepted to travel via Birmingham in such circumstances.

Then again last week TFW ran a 2 hourly service via the Marches so hopefully id be okay to get home that way as long as something was running.

Nothing can be confirmed as its not a done deal but there are likely to be reductions (at least) towards the end of the week.
