That was what I liked about those original 20......my username is a bit of a giveaway....
I remember having 47404 on the old 1E58 FO 0005 Plymouth-York overnight from Bristol, not sure what was wrong with it but the shutters never closed and the racket under the roof at Temple Meads and New Street was excellent!

(Also, for those who remember, Butcher was the guard and accepted a Heart of England out of Bristol...)

Haymarket somehow managed to get hold of random 47s from the other end of the country all the time.
Indeed, we've mentioned this before on here. Some of these were dispatched from Millerhill when Haymarket were short, and because it was a short run to or from Carstairs, they didn't seem to bother if they had train heat or not..... You used to get pretty random things on Dundees, but it was mostly the Carstairs portions that turned up the most freakish things. As you'll see later, 327 worked around Edinburgh all the following week! They probably sent 47271 to Bath Road in exchange in the hope they'd repair it!
Motherwell used to send relief locos to Carstairs when needed too, but there wasn't a single loco with train heat allocated there! I reckon they thought that on the short hop from Carstairs to Edinburgh, there wasn't enought time for the train to cool down or heat up after the Edinburgh portion had been detached.
We were certainly the beneficiaries of their erratic loco allocations plenty of times back then anyway.....they were great times!

I had a very similar experience on a very muggy summer night on that overnight from KX to Newcastle that left after midnight (1N20 maybe?) with 412. It roared like a 83 all the way to the Toon!

In 85/86 when they were very short of ScR 47s with working steam-heat, they used to kidnap LMR/ER ones that turned up north of the border and keep them. In early '86 I remember 47191 and 47213 working for weeks, and 47194 and 47205 putting in a good stint whilst being held against their will too.

Great train! 1N12 in the early 80s, then 1N20 from 83-85, then 1N16 from 85-87, then extended to Edinburgh as 1S29 for a year before the overnights ended. Even when the MkIs ended it got Mk2a/b/c stock in the seated section.

We won't mention the night I was waiting for it at Grantham and it turned up with a no-heat 31.

We seem to have been on the same services a lot.......although quite rarely at the same time!
I missed out on that, but there was another 40 up that bit of the ECML that afternoon...

40015 Newcastle - Cramlington 1S15
It was about a 50/50 split amongst our lot on the platform at Berwick.

*Sigh*.......the days when you could choose which 40 to take.......

Inspired by your apparent encyclopaedic knowledge of the portion workings, I'm going to be cheeky - do you (or does anyone else) happen to know what worked any of the following:

13/5/1977: 14.55 Edinburgh - Carstairs
15/5/1977: 15.40 C - E
3/8/1977: 09.36 E - C
17/11/1978: 17.35 E - C
19/11/1978: 20.20 C - E
27/03/1979: 09.53 E - C (may have run through to Carlisle as Penmanshiel diversion)
05/04/1979: Carstairs - E leg of 09.30 Euston - Edinburgh
15/08/1979: 16.24 C - E
15/07/1980: 07.17 E - C
30/5/1981: 1C90 07.17 E - C
2/6/1981: 17.12 C - E
6/6/1981: 1C90 07.17 E - C
6/6/1981: 19.35 C - E
8/6/1981: 07.30 E - C
8/6/1981: 19.40 C - E
30/10/1981: 1C87 E - C
21/07/1982: 07.06 E - C
06/01/1983: 18.13 C - E
09/06/1990: 1M12 23.05 E - C

Suspect they were all "run of the mill" - hence not recorded - but what was "run of the mill" 40+ years ago looks different from today!

Thanks in advance if anyone can assist.

There are a few books missing, and 1977 and 1990 are too early and late for me, respectively, but I will take a look for 1980-1983. I quite often find things that aren't in railgen from that era.

Keep meaning to post on this thread with the one and only 'big trip' that Ive kept any records for! Covers a lot of the country with some epic overnights.

A few days out of date (always away on hols early June it seems) and mostly spotting with a few haulages noted (no idea of train headcodes etc.) so a little different from the rest of the thread! Hope Ok Mods (if not feel free to put into a new thread)

Hope of interest to someone, if only to marvel at the variety and number of locos around. For some reason Ive noted the times very accurately, but not the details of the trains taken. No idea why.
Anyway, here goes; end of term trip after my 1st year at Bristol Uni in June 1985 with a mate called Andy from Cov. Will note tickets bought (and costs!) at end of the 5 days.
