Given that modern LU trains don't have opening cab windows, I'd imagine it's more comfortable to run with the offside door open in warm weather than to swelter like the passengers back in the saloon.

The best thing to do in summer as a passenger is to stand next to one of the droplights in the end carriage doors. I miss the 59 stock with proper opening windows in the saloon. You could actually get some air moving about with those, not like those sliding ventilators you get now.

Most rolling Stock is now fitted with some form of cab air-cooling/conditioning equipment. Although on certain Stock ('72/C) it is far from adequate!

That's quite interesting, bearing in mind how vulnerable the Underground is at the moment I'm suprised the additional risk of having cab doors open is allowed; presumably at some locations these would end up alongside the platform? I guess the management find the Unions even more of a threat! :D
