Someone has called it 'like an explosion in a Union Jack factory'. I agree. Too much union-jackery lately.
Don't get me wrong, I fully agree.

I certainly don't LIKE it. I just don't hate it as much as I thought I would! :D

I believe LNER were involved, and the guy who did the WMT branding package now works for them...
Oh - what a shame. I really am not a fan of the WMT colours - who would think that dirty-looking burnt orange and aubergine are a good idea, or getting rid of the traditional yellow fronts, which makes trains look very un-British? (so I’m glad that GBR seem to be bringing them back) - or that over-complicated logo with the hexagon, diamonds, and triangles, and the diagonally-striped design, personally - it’s possibly my least-favourite livery, and the one that I’m happiest is getting replaced. The mesh-work of diagonal lines between the two colours looks like some scaly, peeling skin condition. I much preferred the much cleaner, lighter, and brighter London Midland livery.

The designers, and other people who like the colours (including myself)?

We arn't certain yet if regional liveries will be replaced are we? There is a lot about the new livery we can't be certain about lol

The only trains with GBR livery so far have been ones which carry yellow front ends already so we need to see what happens when the livery is applied to some other classes of stock.

Having also photographed it on 701006 this weekend, I think it looks better on the 387, perhaps because the first set of doors are closer to the cab..?

What do you think? 387 or 701 or makes no difference?

This is all subjective and with the GBR livery, they're somewhat damned if they do, damned if they don't for various things. It's a complete redesign of a national rail system. If it's simpler, like GWR and EMR, some will say they lack imagination. If it's bolder and brighter, some will say it's too gaudy. Red, white, and blue, it's GB News. Not a flag, it's un-British. (though, I imagine that complaint would come from outside a rail forum!). All one livery, it's confusing, but multiple liveries per unit/service type, it's fragmented and... confusing.

I think it looks much better in real life, and especially on the 701s (but I just like how the 701s look so that might be part of it).

I think I prefer it on the 387, but I prefer the looks of the 387 in general (I don't particularly like flat fronted trains without the corridor connection, personally).

Too many flags, but not a bad as I feared from the 800 mock up. I still suspect it'll look rubbish on the 800, though.

There's been some discussion of the WMR orange/aubergine livery. I'm puzzled if it's intended to be a West Midlands Travel public transport livery because bus stops flags in the conurbation have the same geometric design but are in green and blue (from memory) certainly not orange.

Late to the party, but I have to admit that the livery looks much better than what I was expecting. The base blue is the perfect shade in my opinion, and for someone coming from SWR land, is a welcome resemblance to the old SWT blue livery, much better than the current grey affair.

I do agree though there needs to be more regional and local variation. Perhaps keep the design across all trains but invert the red and blue for Intercity services, and replace the red with unique colour bands corresponding to regions (Green for GWR, Orange for Midland, Purple for Northern etc) for local services.

As for the Union Jack, I would personally have kept it to the front and back carriages, and tilted them so that the red and white stripes formed from them run as a horizontal line across the whole train.

Finally, i’d get rid of the double arrow and “GBR” text on the red next to the driver’s door, and just have the one double arrow next to “Great British Railways” and the region name.

Yes, it's intended as a colour co-ordinated brand across the Transport for West Midlands area, but does seem slightly confused in its application:

Blue for trams (and Coventry buses due to historical precedent)
Red for buses (Though most I see round Brum are in the 'Platinum' dark grey livery introduced to advertise enhanced customer features)
Orange for trains (Though clearly with a strong purple base colour, which I believe is supposed to invoke the local heritage of Cadbury)
Green for bikes:
Public transport in the West Midlands is to get a brand new look in what is a UK first.

West Midlands Transport (WMT) brings a single identity to bus, rail and tram services plus cycling initiatives in the region in what is the first integrated transport system outside London.

Each has its own distinctive livery - orange for trains, blue for trams, red for buses, green for bikes - centred on the distinctive WMT diamond logo.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), has introduced the new look to spearhead the drive towards a comprehensive and integrated system for the region.

Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said: Branding is not merely dressing, it is about more people using public transport in an easy way.

Think of the iconic red London bus - it is recognised the world over and the capital is rightly proud of it.

This is our chance to inspire a similar sense of pride and identity for people in our region and the transport links that connect their lives.

For the first time we will have trains, trams, buses, and cycles with one uniting identity which is enduring and, over time, becomes something which defines the West Midlands.

We are fortunate the stars have aligned to enable us to do this in a cost effective way.

TfWM recently took over the Metro so we would have needed to rebrand this in any case.

Similarly, rebranding was part of the new rail franchise terms and the bus companies are constantly refreshing their own branding.

We will be rebranding bus stops and stations in the months and years to come as part of the normal process of replacing them, meaning while this will be gradual, it will mostly be natural

Cllr Roger Lawrence, leader of City of Wolverhampton Council and WMCA portfolio holder for transport, said: We are building an integrated transport system that will plug into HS2 and which is critical in unlocking the economic benefits for the region.

Making our transport system look and feel like a world class experience starts with giving it a unique identity that builds trust and confidence.

Rebranding of trains and stations was a contractual requirement when the West Midlands Trains franchise was awarded to operators by Abellio, which began operating local rail services carrying the West Midlands Rail logo last December.

The WM buses red livery is pretty rare though buses are being bought in-house so i assume they will use that colour.

Would be so much better on the first and final carriages with a lovely shade of blue on the carriages in between along with a white stripe and double-sided arrows on each carriage.

They really haven't got a clue, have they? I say that as a former member.
What’s wrong with the intent? The National identity has been misused by thugs and populist politicians for years. Time to redress the balance.

I don’t see a problem with trying to create quality public services under a UK brand. Why would anybody not want that.

Managed to see this at Brighton today.

Its first day in service in its new livery, was not a particularly good one. The heat caused many issues across the Brighton mainline and the train was 30+ late into Brighton, and some Thameslink later than 50 mins late into Brighton.

A fantastic combo of white red and blue in the consist.

Hopefully it's formal introduction IE first day under GBR, is better than this one.

As you can see from my video, the platforms were lined with people, no information on the PIS, nobody knew where and what platform to be on.

Still it was nice to see 387172 in its new livery.

What livery was the middle section supposed to be?

So how will this work.

There are other trains in similar liveries with GBR (coming soon on them).

Will GBR launch at GTR first. I live in an area where Southern trains frequent my local station and can transfer to a Thamslink from Brighton

387 304 is in plain white with blue doors National Express-era c2c livery, I believe, as with all the rest of the Class 387/3s (387 301 - 387 306). (387 225 on the other end is in Gatwick Express red - I think all the Class 387/2s are in GX red).

Thanks, I’d never seen the white with blue doors before. I’m familiar with the GatEx but not the ex c2c one.

Everyone is wondering how it will look on units with odd numbers of coaches, but nobody is asking about the FLIRTs. How will this look on a 755/3 with the asymmetry  and power pack?

GBR livery has already launched at GTR first - on that 387.

On that Geoff Marshall interview the Transport Secretary said that one train from each TOC brought into public ownership would be done initially. Then GBR livery would be confined to new trains and when trains undergo scheduled repaints. So unsurprisingly it's going to take a very long time for the livery to become established, certainly well done the term of the current government.

I really do not like this at all and feel that after all the years of people being able to recognise where trains are going by the different train company it may confuse passengers initially and there are better ways of doing this.

A quick way of improving this would be to remove the red and white from the intermediate carriages.

For reference, there have been some terrible privatised liveries too such as Silverlink so this is not because it's public sector - have there ever been better design standards than London Transport?

So will GTR (TSGN) have an official name change tomorrow?
