Not sure whether to start a new thread. But a friend who works for a TOC sent me the attached picture last night, showing the 'new' GBR uniform.

To be honest I think it actually looks quite smart, it is giving a bit of TfL vibes.

I think it’s horrific. The obsession with royal blue I never understand, and why anyone wants to try and make a uniform that looks a cross between a sports kit and a rowing club blazer outfit I’ll never know. The best uniforms are always those which are quite plain and simple.

Given its clearly computer generated (and pretty sure has done the rounds atleast once before already) this won't be the uniform and we can (hopefully!) expect something different and probably more along the lines of what TOC staff have already...

I don't think that's real.

Apparently according to a handout given at Brighton station yesterday to members of the press for the launch of the new look train, the names for each operator will be:

It doesn't mention any of the other brands (Gatwick Express, Heathrow Express, Stansted Express etc).

I cannot link to the leaflet yet as it does have an embargo notice on it until sometime next week

Is this suggesting that GWR and its Sleeper service will be separated?

I like the belt buckle! I’m not sure about the lighter shade of blue, though. And why only a clip-on tie, and not also the option for a proper one?

So they want to move away from the Northern brand, and just have “North”, unlike most of the others not changing?

With the Class 700s getting ready for a livery change, I guess maybe the last unit of each of the current livery changes might get the new GBR livery? c2c’s Class 357s, EMR, CrossCountry - are Southeastern still doing their Class 376s, or are they all done already? I guess all of Chiltern’s Mark 5A sets have been done already, so it’s too late for them? Though for c2c they picked a new Class 720 for the “Coming soon” sticker, so I guess maybe they might like to do that for the GBR livery as well. I guess that there will be a single unit at every TOC under public ownership to get the livery soon.

With a few exceptions clip-on ties have been pretty standard for front line staff for decades.

I wouldn't want to risk a real one, too much risk of an irate forumite finding the colours patriotic and grabbing it ;)

Why is Southern staying as Southern but Northern is shortened to North? That's a weird inconsistency.
Same for South Western vs South East.

Heathrow Express is an Open Access so that wouldn't be included here.

I guess they want to change the branding slightly for those 2 operators who have had a poor reputation for their train services over recent years.

I was thinking exactly the same. Inconsistent and doesn't immediately make any sense.

Also "South East" is commonly used as a term which describes the geographical area that stretches far beyond South Eastern's boundary, eg, "The railways in the South East".

I assume the blue colour of the SE and GBR livery is sufficiently different for them to bother changing? Am I right some of the 377s on SE are ex-another operator (TL???) and they've just kept the old blue because it's so similar to SE blue?
GBR uses two different shades of blue. I have no idea which shade is supposed to be the primary one.

The implementation of this livery is a joke. The logo isn’t in RA2 typeface. Vehicle and unit numbers are in yet another different typeface.

Frankly, it’s amateur.

That was only Geoff guessing. The other blue, that appears extensively in the livery, is paler.
I do agree with him though on that darker blue being used as the main blue for the design. On the livery I think it is being treated as the "base colour" (featured extensively ofc at the front of the units and at the top of each carriage) with the lighter blue (and rest) layered ontop. It is confusing though as the darker blue features a lot more on the non-livery branding (e.g. their logo asset and the teased app mockup for example) as I'm assuming they tried to mimic the union jack colours more through the darker blue + red combo) with the lighter blue an embelishment. I guess if they release a TfL style design standards briefing set we will know for sure ;)

Having seen 701006 yesterday the impression I got was that the lighter blue was the main blue colour, hence the confusion. There's also two shades of red, but it's clearer that the darker shade is the main one.

I love the livery but THIS you've mentioned here, is what really annoys me.
And it's silly to have London Northwestern Railway become "North West" when it barely touches it.

TransPennine was another silly retention. As far as routes go it should be lumped in with North, apart from the WCML ones which could be West Coast.

I think there are far more sub-brands than there need to be here.

SE, SW Electric routes, SN, TL could all be Southern
GW, SW Diesel routes, could all be Western
CH, EMR, WMT, XC ex Central Trains could all be Midland
GN, GA, c2c, could all be Eastern
Northern could stay as Northern
etc.

I'd have expected London Northwestern to revert to "London Midland".

You probably need to align brands alongside the existing ticketing structure to begin with. All that's happening now is some minor rebranding - some changed names and paint to mark that "things are changing."

Once you've done that you can start to think about actual changes, but it'd be a 'brave' government that started off with any customer facing changes much beyond some new liveries and signs.

SW19 in body, SE23 in spirit.
I like these sub-brands, gets the point across without putting everything under an excessively large umbrella. I think it's really important to have these, especially at large terminus stations with multiple operators, like Victoria where hypothetically a "Great British Railways | Southern" train can either take you to Dover or to Brighton.

It also helps staff out with a chance of giving directions without literally sounding like "Get on the GBR train one stop then change for the GBR train three stops and then get on the GBR train until the last stop"

Do all TOCs under public ownership have a unit with a “Coming soon” sticker on them? I know that SWR, c2c, and Greater Anglia do, but I’m not sure about Northern, so maybe Northern’s re-branding will come later than with other TOCs. Is there a list of the units which have a “Coming soon” sticker on them?
