Leeds station improvement updates

Also, the announcements at New Street a few days ago were advising not to rely on platform information on apps as the data was inaccurate. I guess a live data feed problem somewhere along the line so it’s not 100% reliable. It’s not ideal if the apps are wrong and the signage is woeful, so yes, just announce it please.
I'm surprised an announcement was made at New Street as they don't tend to bother making announcements these days for advertising services. The only way to check is to physically look at the customer information displays.

RTT would generally be accurate, most other sites (including National Rail) might not be because Birmingham New Street is currently disconnected from the central passenger information system (Darwin) which is what most apps use.
Ah that’s a bit unfortunate. Apologies, a bit off topic but how did it become disconnected?

Good to know they can’t be bothered to be helpful!

Info I had was on Princes Square by the multi storey car park. This is currently the taxi holding area for when the official drop off is busy.
The footpaths that were supposed to be closed from today aren't. The only activity I've seen was the delivery of a large pile of the red and white barriers, similar to the those blocking off the former drop-off point outside wetherspoons, into the surface car park.

Part of the area on the Princes Exchange car park is taped off as the flagstones have been lifted, but that's inside the existing fenced off area.

Passing through Leeds station this morning for the first time in months a lot of the work barriers have now been removed outside the front and I couldn’t help feeling slightly…underwhelmed?

I’ll give it chance as they obviously haven’t finished yet but it certainly isn’t Kings Cross!

A lot of the time and money was spent underground in the arches below.

There have been boards up for a very long time when I’ve ventured out that way so can’t really see what the aim is. Wasn’t there an Indian restaurant in the arches below, and has that space now all gone? In theory the Scarborough pub should be delighted to not be faced with a bus stop and brick wall, but is if all really necessary

There was, and before that it was Dino's (my favourite place to spend an evening dining). The former rotunda is roughly where the lift/lifts is/are (I don't know how many there are).

Round the back, meanwhile, it's all very confusing. The steps and footpath that were supposed to have been closed off from 20 April are still open. The car park was split in two, and four blue portable cabins arrived. Last week, 36 white portable cabins arrived. I did wonder if the refurbishment of Princes Exchange was running behind schedule (it's Network Rail, so...) and the white portable cabins are to decant people from the admin block which is due to come down at some point. I think there are more cabins in that car park now that at Huddersfield for TRU...

Also, the barriers and car readers, as well as the centre post for the lockable gates, were removed last week and the area resurfaced to bring everything up to the same level. You'd have thought they would have done that months ago, given all of the previous work and low-loader movements, but obviously I'm no project manager. ;)

We can discuss whether what they have done is 'right' but something needed doing 100%. It was an awful experience coming out of the main entrance prior to the improvements.

The portakabins are part of the messroom facility changes coming to Leeds. Northern will be using them while the offices upstairs are renovated. TPE/XC/LNER are going into Princes Exchange.

Northern have portakabins because the additional walking time to/from Princes Exchange would have broken pretty much every single diagram. By having portakabins off Platform 0 and using the access gate onto P1, the current walking timings can be used

Exactly, it was an awful, dingy, steep staircase before that was like something from the song ‘Down In The Tube Station at Midnight.’ It’s definitely going to be better now if not perfect.

Ah. I know there's a gate on P0 leading to the path down to the other car park; didn't realise there was one to the area near the multi-storey as well (unless it hasn't been done yet). Unless the walking time from the existing gate still works, of course.

This year's batch of cygnets (six) has hatched, so I've a much better distraction on the river now...

Some people are saying they had no ‘D’s so had to use an upside down “P”.

It's a lower case d, but it looks to be placed slightly too low (if that's not an optical illusion).

I think that's right, both the d and the s are placed slightly too low.
I think that the ‘d‘ is correct; the second ‘e’ is too high, the first one and the ‘s’ are a bit high as well. The letter spacing (kerning?) is all over the shop as well.

I might be wrong but there is a large gate off P1 that @dodecahedron67 could be referring to.

If you walked through a gate on P1 you'd end up on the track for P0...

There's a big gate off to the side next to the multi-storey, with a footpath (and yellow metal barrier) leading past the car park to the second one, which is used by staff. What I can't see (now that the cabins are in the way) is if there is or was an entrance onto that part of the first car park that has the white cabins. If not, the walk down the path and doubling back will be longer than leaving via the goods entrance and walking past the multi-storey. Me not noticing a gate into the first car park doesn't mean there isn't one, just that I hadn't noticed one before.

Platform 1 carries on for about 3 coach lengths past the buffer stops of platform 0. There is definitely a gate at the end of platform 1 next to the ticket office.

Just passed through Leeds and had a look. It's quite a hefty metal gate which looks like a section of fencing but is actually a sliding gate and it opened as I was there so it's definitely in use

If it's the one I'm thinking of, exited through there a few months ago when the station was evacuated.

The gate by the buffers on P1 is indeed the gate I’m referring to. It’s an authorised entry point for traincrew to Leeds station
No it’s not. That gate is an emergency exit, but mainly used for station and train cleaners to access the main bin area. Traincrew use a pathway that goes between the bins and into a set of doors out of public view to access the admin block, there is also a door between the first class lounge and McDonald’s on the platform side that also allows access to the admin block.

The gate on platform 1 is protected by card access that is not given to traincrew, mainly just cleaners and network rail staff and temporary cards given to contractors.

Also the gate and walkway on platform 0 to the staff car park closes on Monday until end of the year due to the building works taking place.

I think I know what entries and exits I can and can’t use.

I think we're talking about the same thing, I'm just not describing it very well because I don't use it and I've only been to the P0 area twice since it opened...

... in which case, this confuses me. The riverside steps are still open, so I guess that they will close on Monday as well.

The Leeds / Leeps issue on the big sign outside the £46m (apparently) development at Leeds Station made it to Have I Got News for You on Friday. Must have been a slow news week last week.

Saw a post on Facebook from The Hoot that the up escalator to the footbridge is broken again. I don't pass through the station as much as I used to - how long did it last this time? It was working last Friday when I went to Glasshoughton, but is anyone keeping score?

The riverside steps are now closed, with big yellow fencing going up on the perimeter of the Princes Square car park. The footpath closure is causing me some merriment as people ignore the "Footpath Ahead Closed" sign, especially on Tuesday when someone with her nose in her phone walked past the sign and the green tent that had been pitched, and only stopped when she hit the metal fence.

Overall the escalator situation has been better recently, but there was one night this week where the main P8 upward escalator was out of action, and both the upward South entrance escalators were also broken too, which continued into the next morning.

When I used Leeds Station on Friday the lifts & escalators from the main concourse to the bridge above & the platforms were all working normally.
