As asked for on the glasgow central to queen street thread, what recommendations have you got for a dam good pub near a station, wether its for food or ale ?

Mine would be the 'Prince of wales' opposite Foxfield station, a massive variety of 'real ales' and no commercial gassy stuff !

Centurion on Newcastle station. How they could ever have covered up the ceiling is beyond me, it's spectacular in all its glory and the beer's drinkable too.

The 3 Guinneas in the old GWR booking hall at Reading, good beer bit a little pricey at £3.40 a pint but worthwhile in my opinion.

The Glebe and the White Star in Stoke - less than 5 mins walk from the station, and both do great beer and pretty decent food (in the White Star anyway).

I also seem to keep finding the Wellington at Waterloo.

There is a rather good one perticualy for cider lover by Taunting oppersite Wonders County Cricket Club.

The Foresters at Brockenhust is where I spent a lot of my when I should have been in college.

I must know of a few so will have a think.

the Sheffield Tap can be horrendously expensive for foreign beers though, i.e. £6.90 for 0,33l Rochefort 10 last friday.

Brunswick & Alexandra Hotel near Derby station are good

Euston Tap outside Euston station - tiny place but ok at this time of year as you can loiter outside, not sure how it will cope in winter though. It is a sister to Sheffiepd Tap previously mention and a York one should be 'coming soon'.

How about the "Half Way House" Fleshmarket Close, not too far from the Waverley?

The Railway Tavern a 2 minute walk form Newtown (Powys) continuous CAMRA Good Beer Guide entry for 17 years.
The Red Lion in Caersws is also worth a 3/4 minute walk if your ever down the Cambrian. Both are drinking and locals pubs though.
The Wetherpsoons in Aberystwyth - Yr Hen Orsaf is on the station itself if that's your bag/budget.

The Crown by Lime Street is decent enough. Can be a bit old manish, especially in the week, but it sells real ale and is under £2 a pint.

Strewth - several. With me, beer = trains, in equal measure!
1) The Guildford Arms, across Princes Street from the Waverley Steps in Edinburgh,
2) Ryries Bar, immediately outside Haymarket Station,
3) The Shipwright's Arms down the road from Whitehaven station USED to have good ale, but I haven't been there in ages. Maybe Busterfridge could tell us what it's like now, as he lives not far from there, eh Freebird?
4) The Corn Exchange in George Square, Glasgow, outside Queen Street. It is a Wetherspoons pub, but I have no problem with them. They're HONEST, unpretentious boozers.
5) I forgot what it's called, but there is a pub in front of the ticket barriers of Glasgow Queen Street Upper. I had a few there in September 1993, and it was beautiful Director's. The price was OK, but the environs are shabby.

At Cardiff Central you have the choice of two wetherspoons pubs (The Prince Of Wales or The Great Western) if you don't want to go far (both are pretty much right outside the station). There's also a few smaller pubs around St Marys street that are quite close too. I quite like the cottage.

Within 5 minutes of Exeter St Davids there is The Great Western which is half decent for ales & also The Jolly Porter (I assume they are both still active - haven't had a reason to visit either recently).

The railway by Alton, not the one closet to the station but the terecced one opersite the other one sigh the train sticking out of the wall, and yes two pubs oppersite each other can have the same name.

Or up St David's Hill for The Imperial. A 'Spoons, but one of the better ones. Bleddy massive place as well. Also probably the only JDW in the country with an orangery!

The Maltings, York - turn left outside station, follow the road and it's just before the bridge on the right
Great Western, Wolverhampton - virtually underneath the station. Was there earlier today
Ship & Mitre, Liverpool
Waters Green Tavern, Macclesfield
Euston - as well as Euston Tap there is also the Bree Louise, the Doric Arch and Mabels Tavern

Stafford - try The Sun or Chambers
Crewe - British Lion, was good but I've not been since recent change of landlord
Yorton - Station Hotel - sole reason for existence of station !
Shrewsbury - Salopian Bar - past bus station and keep going (other good pubs at top of hill)


to clarify The Cottage is the name of the pub. I like it there too

Having we a budding editor sitting in the onboard bar who can make an online directory out of the suggestions?

Possible criteria for inclusion (ie fields in the directory that can be used a filters):

near a station (with approx. distance/walk time)
accessibility when changing trains (on platform/no barrier/barrier)
CAMRA
quality/type of beer/etc
price?
availability/quality of pub food
opinion?
directions?

maybe also facility for asking others about a station,
eg changing at Ely, where is closest decent pub?


I would certainly consult it.

It is a shame lots of these pubs are in the south (Sheffield, Doncaster, London!) where ,as any fule kno, the beer is like warm p*ss water!

So PROPER beer can be had here:

York - Either the Maltings or the Brigantes 5 mins formthe station. No choice. Just go, ignore the one on the station.

Newcastle - Centurian - wonderful. (Although it had run out of Ale last time i went)

Glasgow - Horseshoe. Really good bar, friendly and they do a good pie!

Stalybridge/Dewsbury and Huddersfield are all really good and right on the station. Nice and warm in the winter to!

Hartlepool - Rat Race Ale House in Hartlepool station - strange opening times! (i am disgusted by suggesting ANYTHING in Hartlepool)

Leeds - Brewery tap is quite nice


Now for the south (shudder)

St Pancras - Betjemen Arms - Nice but quite expensive, however you can sit outside and watch the Eurostars come and go.

Euston - Euston Tap. Not bad BUT the Bree Louise is much better but gets rammed at 5 pm ( it is on Coburg Street)

Exeter - Great Western is OK and the IMperial is noice but it is an up hill walk

Bristol - the Eccentric Engineer at the foot of the access ramp to Temple Meads

The ones I can personally vouch for:-

Manchester Piccadilly - Boars Head (diagonally opposite Fairfield St entrance), no food but always a choice of proper beers.

Mossley - The Commercial again no food AFAIK but very good selection of ales

Stalybridge - Apart from the superb buffet bar, Q next door is worth a visit if you like Hydes and they have just re-opened the excellent huge beer garden

Greenfield - Railway Tavern opposite the station, excellent choice of Cider as well as ale but gets very busy on a Saturday afternoon

Marsden - again The Railway, very cheap food and normally about 5 real ales.

London Victoria - St Georges Tavern on Belgrave Road - good real ale and excellent sausage and mash.

Unfortunately for every other pub on this list, the best pub was mentioned in the opening post. Though you did forget to emphasise that they brew some of their own, serve fantastic pasties, and have a huge range of malt whiskys

Couple of other good ones :
Duke of Edinburgh, Barrow-in-Furness
Boathouse Inn, Wylam
There's a few near Manchester Oxford Road too

tricky - it does have VERY odd opening hours. I would check before you go. t miught have to close when a match is on . If it isnt open you might try the Marina. It is on (suprise!) Hartlepooh marina. It is chain pub but you wont get a kicking as you might in the town! It is about 5-10 minutes from the station and you can see the ground from the pub

The one on the station is basically one room with a small bar. The beer is good and it is worth a visit
