Nothing, there just isn't room nor any space to expand it. It's fine for a handful of 2 car 196s but not for the full fleet.

Thanks, but was Bletchley Depot not built to maintain the Class 310 fleet (50 4-car sets), the DMUs for the Bletchley/Bedford and St Albans Abbey branches, and some of the Marylebone DMU fleet, plus a handful of diesel shunters!

Further news on Bedford:

A council has opposed plans to move a proposed multi‑storey car park to another location as part of the East West Rail (EWR) project.

Bedford Borough Council passed the motion at its full council meeting on Wednesday after receiving a petition with 692 signatures.

EWR said moving the car park from the east to the west of Bedford station would reduce the visual impact on nearby residents.

Conservative elected mayor Tom Wootton said the motion was "good ammunition to fire" at EWR during the council's next meeting with the organisation.

Confusingly the council seems to be talking about the EWR proposals for Midland station, but the BBC has used an illustration of the EWR proposals for St Johns.

Not sure if this counts as "consultation" but I noticed as I drove over Bow Brickhill level crossing this morning that they have the cables across the road to count the amount of traffic using Brickhill Street and Brickhill Road between Bletcham Way (the A4146) and the A5 Watling Street.

Presumably data to feed into the level crossing replacement plans.

I don't remember seeing them when I drove that way a couple of weeks ago.

Having a family member working at the council, I heard that the MP essentially lobbied the Queen’s Park community against it.

The X5 in peak hours carries full loads of full fare paying passengers, and the road queues to get into Cambridge each morning on the A421 are something else.

Filling trains won't be a problem, not to mention Oxford-Cambridge suppressed demand due to the difficulty of the current journey.

Does anyone on this forum really believe that the Oxford to Cambridge route will be up and running in their lifetime? I'm 71 and I doubt I will see passenger trains running a regular service from Oxford to Bedford. The Borders Line in Scotland opened only after 20 years of active campaigning. I do not see people marching on the streets of Bletchley and Bedford demanding better access to Oxford or Cambridge. The X5 bus (Oxford, Bedford, St Neots, Cambridge), although a half-hourly service, is full of pensioners like me who get free coach travel, and would not be convinced to pay to travel by train to Cambridge and then have another bus ride to the centre.
Yes, I would loved to be proved wrong and I am 100% behind the idea, but I am realistic.
6 years on and still no sign of trains from Oxford to Cambridge. I am 77 and am still waiting for scheduled trains to get to Bletchley, let alone Bedford and Cambridge. The X5 Oxford to Cambridge bus as been downgraded to the 905, even at peak times, and the route north of Bedford has yet to decided, let alone started. The existing Bedford Hospital Car Park is in the way and EWR is going to charge the NHS £35 million to build a multi story one in its place. The plan for Bedford Station car park is to put it west of the station, with all cars having to go over the existing road bridge into a built up area. Luckily I come from a family with great longevity so there is still at least 20 years for EWS to prove my prediction in 2020 wrong!!

Really sorry to hear this Mike. I turn 64 in a fortnight ands I doubt I will travel on any HS2 train except maybe Curzon St - OOC.

The "Oxbridge" route will very obviously be a great passenger corridor when it is eventually commissioned, but sadly not in our lifetimes.
These days this country is incapable of committing to anything other than parliamentary term length projects. How on earth they expect to build the LHR 4rd runway I dread to think

Not sure if this counts as a consultation update (mods, please move if there's somewhere more appropriate).

There will be a new regulator for EWR with the aim to speed up environmental assessments and approvals.

https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/local-news/update-issued-major-governemnet-project-33580507

From the article:

The long-awaited East West Rail project linking Cambridge with Oxford and Milton Keynes has seen the government confirm a new regulator to 'speed up' project approvals. The change is expected to cut delays by helping developers complete environmental assessments more quickly.

East West Rail has introduced a Lead Environmental Regulator to streamline planning and make key decisions “efficient” and “effective” for the project due to be completed by the late 2030s. Officials say this will “cut bureaucracy rather than environmental standards”.

East West Rail is expected to unlock £6.7 billion in economic growth and 100,000 new homes. The announcement follows a £100 million government investment in digital services and specialist staff for the Environment Agency and Natural England to process planning applications faster over the next three years.

Phillip Duffy, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, said: “Once complete, 3.5 million people across Oxford, Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Bedford will have access to more frequent trains, better connections and a station close to home”.

Emma Reynolds, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says it is a “win-win situation for jobs, prosperity and nature”. Reynolds continued: “Our regulators do vital work protecting the environment we all depend on. Today marks a decisive shift in our drive to make regulation work for the people of Britain”.

David Hughes, Chief Executive Officer at East West Rail, said: “The single point of contact will make a huge difference, as it will ensure that key decisions can be made efficiently, and effectively.”

He added: “This will deliver momentum for the construction of the railway” and “allow the region to feel the economic and social benefits far sooner than would have otherwise been the case”.

Latest news on consultations, announced this morning. Note that the consultation materials themselves are not yet available. There are a number of face-face events along the route, plus a couple of online webinars.

East West Rail announces details of final route-wide consultation

We are pleased to announce details of our forthcoming, route-wide final consultation on our latest plans for the railway.

Running from 14 April to 9 June 2026, our eight-week consultation gives communities a vital opportunity to help shape the final design of the railway linking Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge before we submit a Development Consent Order in 2027.

Erm. Isn't this a bit late given as just the one station has been built and opened, but there still aren't any trains.

Totally get it for the Bletchley -Bedford phase though as it is a bit embarrassing having to use the oldest DMUs on the system.

There’s also a significant issue on the open route with Bicester level crossing downtime. I believe the solution will be part of this consultation stage.

I was under the impression the solution had already been proposed in November last year?

Or would the consultation stage include promulgating that information to the local community?

I assumed it would still be the last chance to propose a different option?

Consultation has reopened for a few weeks

East West Rail will connect communities between Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge, supporting sustainable economic growth in the area. The new railway would make it easier to reach jobs, education, public services and days out with family and friends. You can read more about the proposed benefits of East West Rail here.

We have updated our proposals to take account of further design work, ongoing engagement, environmental assessments, traffic and transport analysis and feedback from the consultation that concluded in January 2025.

This consultation will run for eight weeks from 14 April to 9 June 2026

One of the key changes is the proposal for full electrification of the Marston Vale Line

To support the government’s commitment to decarbonisation – and our goal of delivering a net zero carbon passenger railway – we plan to power trains using overhead electrification. In November 2025, we confirmed that this will be delivered using a method called discontinuous electrification.

BBC News report is here:

Trains will call at a station serving the new Universal theme park within the resort's "first few years", according to a rail company.
East West Rail (EWR), which is planning a new rail line connecting Oxford and Cambridge, said it was accelerating some of its plans in part because of the proposed visitor attraction in Bedfordshire.
More frequent and longer trains will run on the line because of expected higher demand. A new station built on the site of one of the government's new towns could also be brought forward by five years.
But some of those living along EWR's route said they were "fed up" with the plans. An eight-week consultation into the £6bn railway is opening today.
It will be the final consultation before EWR applies to government for permission to build the line in 2027.

It surely is a no brainer.
Bletchley has 25kV, as does Bedford, as deos the ECML which it will pass over somewhere near Sandy, as well as arriving at Cambridge with yet more 25kV
Oh and lets not forget Oxford which should eventually have 25kV when they finally rebuild the station.

The issue is the utter inability of UK PLC to manage capital infrastructure projects.

Why are they proposing to not electrifying the new section Bedford-Cambridge fully? Seems an odd choice to have a gap there.

BBC News report is here:

I'm glad to hear they're intending to speed up things. I still think the improved access to Cambridge for commuting and visiting is the biggest justification, Universal will surely help boost passenger numbers and strengthen the case for the line further. Let's hope construction can start quickly.

Both correct and incorrect. We manage these projects for votes. HS2 to Crewe was cancelled for the pro-roads vote after (IIRC) fuss over London's ULEZ zone.

There's also a story in the construction trade press about running the delivery packages in parallel to reduce overall costs and risks.

The move, revealed in its latest consultation, will see key packages of work brought forward and delivered at the same time rather than waiting for earlier phases to complete – a shift designed to cut programme risk and bring earlier benefits to passengers and developers.

Under the previous model, the railway would have been delivered in stages linking Oxford to Cambridge in sequence. The new approach instead breaks the route into live construction packages that can progress independently and open as they are finished.

I thought that one of the lessons learnt from HS2 was not to do this? Because you have different contractors competing to use the same materials and equipment at the same time

HS2 is a much bigger project than this will be though, so it may not be much of an issue.

It was cancelled because the cost of HS2 was WAY over budget and out of control.

Rishi Sunak cancelled HS2 because he believed it would get him more votes to do so. To me it doesn't appear that worked, but that was very clearly his intention.

I do also wonder why they left that section out, and why they chose Oxford Parkway-Bicester Village instead of going from Oxford itself. Though the fact it goes from Bicester suggests the supply could be shared with a (partial or full) electrification project for Chiltern.

I would expect that wiring Oxford station wants to be done as part of Didcot-Oxford rather than from the Parkway side. Given EWR would be running BEMUs, they can afford to leave the hard bit to someone else and get enough electrification for their needs done.

I talked to EWR at a consultation last year about this. Basically it's all cost and timeline driven. Keep electrified sections as small as possible and you reduce capital outlay and deliver sooner.

Yeah - I can watch electric trains glide past my closed ( sorry merged) station. I wont be on the train as I will be driving which might negate the green credentials of the line!

With discontinuous electrification they have obviously calculated that Parkway to Bicester and Bletchley to MKC will be sufficient to recharge the batteries to enable trains to run the remainder of the Oxford to Bletchley section. This means that they can spread the capital expenditure over a longer period and get the new trains they will need running sooner. Prior to full electrification of the Oxford area they would still need to electrify some of the platforms and carriage sidings if EWR was fully electrified which would be more economically justified by wiring the whole station when the line is electrified.

An artists impression of the underpass at London Road, Biscester. A footpath, cycleway and single-lane road pass beneath the railway. There is also a pedestrian bridge over the underpass. On the railway, a train is on the bridge, blurred to give the impression of speed. A single set of catenary spans the railway.

I like that this image (figure 23, page 12) implies that "discontinuous electrification" will be implemented by only electrifying one track.
