Hi All,

I’m contemplating visiting the Wensleydale Railway on 25 April and see that the light blue timetable is operating. Does anyone know what is likely to be rostered to be working that day?

Many thanks

Odds are a pacer. I can't confirm exactly which one, but there's no loco haulage rostered that weekend.

Locomotive hauled services are signified by a black square in the bottom right corner or a black triangle in the top right corner (if it’s a service with catering) of the date. Usually when it is a dark blue day a pacer, usually 143623 but could be 142060 with the 121 on the Scruton shuttles, normal light blue is usually a pacer but could be the 121 if loadings are light

I visited today on a yellow day and I can confirm the class 143 was running trains. Yellow timetable is a DMU then - I thought it meant it could be either a dmu or loco but the loco hauled ones are loco hauled and if it isn't it is not loco hauled? Got it. Misunderstood there. Still had a perfectly enjoyable 143 ride. In my understanding dark blue services have a main train service through the "core section" from Leeming Bar to Leyburn, with a pacer (this is stated on a poster at Leyburn's Station Cafe) running the shuttle. The line continues to Northerallerton West and then to the ECML, but this part of the line has not yet reopened after a level crossing accident (and it is not a priority I don't think)
The part to Redmire beyond Leyburn is closed for track renewals.

That part of the railway is unsafe to run on, I was talking to a volunteer last year about it (to Northallerton) something go do with a bridge

This line struggles to attract support, no steam, track beyond Leyburn has had to be taken out of use because of condition, running to Northallerton not possible on the ECML.

Pretty sure their 37 was out yesterday (Saturday). We live within earshot and it certainly didn’t sound like a Pacer….

Don't give it a miss, it's a nice line (the core is 12 miles and scruton is an extra few so you get to do more of the line)

Pacers just simply don’t attract me to visit I’m afraid. I’ll go at some point in the future when the offerings are more appealing

The line struggles to attract support, but it's still really nice.
The diesel offering packs a punch for the quite limited funding it gets. And their home fleet Diesel Gala is quite good, quiet, and with a half decent mix of traction (33, 37, 47 and possible 14s) plus the Blue Grey stock, and much quieter than some of the big ones.

25th April is 37250 according to social media - it is also worth noting it is a nice run on a pacer. good widows for viewing the fin north Yorkshire countryside and at slow speeds a perfectly comfortable ride

Those mk2 Blue and Greys are very nice interior wise, you get some nice thrash from the 14(s) when they do run

it has been busy the last few times I have gone but that tends to be around public holidays. The Pacer trip I had was the least well loaded but still respectable

track beyond Leyburn has had to be taken out of use because of condition
But is being repaired bit by bit. They hope, irc, to be back running to Redmire next year.

Isn’t it weird how their own website contradicts this!?

If it’s 37250 I’d definitely pop along as I’m spending the weekend in the North East / Yorkshire.

The pacer doesn’t interest me, I’d rather go on a 156/158 to Ashington or Bishop Auckland.

You don't need any particular skills to do a Facebook post but you might to be let lose on the website. I am sure it will be updated in due course as this information was only issued yesterday morning. I have always found the social media accounts to be accurate.

completely agree albeit Facebook is an outdated method nowadays and HRs will lose customers if reliant upon that for being the voice to their audience

So where do you think they should post to get to the general public who no doubt make up the vast majority their customers?

I think it's about having a presence on numerous different platforms, as in today's day and age I'm not sure there's a 'one size fits all' approach to reaching a customer base. For example, I don't have Facebook or Twitter, but I do have Instagram. I follow a variety of heritage railways on there and will find out about upcoming events when they post about them. I'll then go on their website for more details, timetables etc.

It is interesting to see what people think. My own railway has website but Facebook is the only place that is used to ‘advertise’ things but it is really a tourist line rather than enthusiasts line

Depends what your demographic is but Facebook alone will alienate a lot of people nowadays in my experience

If your railway wanted to potentially increase its reach without much additional effort, it could could create an Instagram profile and link it to the existing Facebook profile. As Meta owns both, when you post on Facebook you also get the option to post to the linked Instagram account, so the Facebook post would then also appear on Instagram.

I reckon a good number of tourists will post on Instagram as it's a platform that's all about sharing photos and videos, and in this day and age people love to let other people know what they've been up to. I know the Swanage Railway, which is a line that will carry a good number of tourists, will regularly share posts from people who have travelled on the line that day, and on a normal running day they're usually just families who have had a nice day out.

Saturday was the 37. We're referring to Sundays traction being the 143.

There is a northallerton west station. The part from scruton to here is a freight only line for now.
Leyburn is because of condition.

They say at wensleydale that they run diesel for cost cutting...as they struggle to earn profits even with diesel. A volunteer told me when I visited this year is the first year the railway has been doing relatively well financially...
It needs support and is a great railway so I do recommend a visit - they have a diesel gala soon too with their fabulous home fleet.

Sounds like the 37 is confirmed so I will probably pay the line a visit on that day then.

The Wensleydale Brewery’s tap room and shop is back open Fridays to Sundays now if that floats your boat - it’s just round the corner from Leyburn station

Same details on Twitter and Instagram. Not sure if they use other socials - so the info looks legit even if the timetable hasn't yet changed.

I'm in that area later this week and into the weekend so may make a trip. Last time we called in to Leyburn we had just missed a service so the visit was limited to the cafe.

I was told by someone at another heritage line that on a per mile basis, running a steam loco costs about 5 times as much as a diesel. No idea how that calculation is done, or what costs are covered, but he was the finance person so should have a good idea.
