The frequency is a joke, but that does look like fairly cleaned up routes, I still think the Shaw & Ethihad ends need swapping to reduce a needless change of tram.

The main thing that sticks out to me is the poor service between Victoria and Piccadilly. One route, only every 15 minutes, to connect the two main stations. If there was a useful mainline service via the Ordsall Chord, this wouldn't matter much since that's a lot faster (just 10 minutes); but there's only 1tph in each direction so it's pretty useless for most journeys.
Yes, you could go from Piccadilly to St. Peters Square, and change via the other platform to get to Victoria but by the time you've done that you probably might as well wait for the next direct service.

Up until recently I worked in Salford Quays, changing at Cornbrook from the Altrincham line. Whenever the frequencies in the peaks were reduced, overcrowding quickly became a problem. There were times when it was almost quicker getting the Trafford Centre service and walking from the War Museum
It depends exactly where on the Salford Quays campus you're aiming for, but certainly for the area around the Lowry I find it quicker to get the tram to IWM then walk. The tram around Salford Quays is so slow.

A lot have become doubles, e.g. most of the Bury-Altrincham services and the Ashton-Eccles service.

That explains the doubles I've seen over the M60 at Ashton

What about United home games? Will frequencies increase those days? Obviously a City game is another matter :D

All apart from 2 trams on the ALT to SPC and ALT to BRY are now doubles, so this has increased capacity and I will imagin they will double up the other 2 on a united match day. They will also double up as many of the TRC to CRP as they can.

ALT should run to a 7.5 min frequency during off peak for united games. Unsure whey they will terminate tho as they used to go to CRP.

Sorry, but I think it would be appreciated by forum members in general if you used the full tram stop names, not abbreviations. I've lived in Sale then Timperley since 1989, travelled on the first trams in April 1992 (and before that, having worked on the project), and I struggled to work out where CRP was.....

For any suggestions/ideas etc regarding how the service could be improved, the network expanded or anything else that isn't confirmed as happening, please use the following thread:

Apparently a tram derailed yesterday at Piccadilly on the city-bound platform. They've had to remove some of the platform edging to rerail it. Everything seems to be running fine today though

How has a tram managed to derail at or approaching a platform?
It's a very sharp curve on the immediate approach to the inbound platform at Piccadilly.

The tram tracks have to negotiate their way through the original pillars holding up the 'upstairs' main line terminal platforms and tracks. When the design for the tram stop was done (late 1980s for opening in 1992) I recall there was some concern that a derailed tram might knock down one or more pillars and risk collapsing part of the station. Hence the thick concrete walls surrounding the tracks. It seems that the concern was justified!

It would be interesting to know if the Etihad deal includes any benefit for Metrolink, such as the cost of re-naming the station and changing everything that references that name, both at the start and when the deal ends. It's possible that a successor sponsor could pay the latter cost to rename to their own preference, but also possible that they won't be interested in changing the tramstop.

I somehow never percieved that the "Etihad" in the tram stop/area name had any association with the airline until now.

Thanks. Not sure that it had ever previously been detailed on here
I always get it confused with SPS which is St Peter’s Square stop code.

I’m pretty sure Trafford Palazzo has a code linked with Event City but I am unsure about that one

What is the currently-known Govermental funding time period for Greater Manchester from which Metrolink can draw upon?
I don't understand the question.

I think Anchorage and Salford Quays do too as they were also renamed just before opening.

Wait until you hear why it's called Oxford

If a 15 minute frequency becomes the norm, effectively reducing the service provision from 5tph to 4tph and the total passenger footfall remains the same, will that mean the trams will have a passenger number problem capacity-wise unless some single tram services become doubles?
This morning the reduction is very noticeable. I sometimes opt for the tram from Piccadilly to St Peter's Square, mainly if I'm not feeling like the walk. But today as my train pulled into Piccadilly, the next service towards St Peter's Square was 12 minutes away, meaning that the walk was considerably quicker. On the previous timetable you could pretty much guarantee one leaving well inside of 5 mins.

This is the problem with reducing services on previously high frequency, high occupancy routes. Even small delays can quickly start to bake into much longer ones. It might not seem much in isolation, but collectively it's already starting to have an impact on commuters, many have noted where I work how much worse it seems already. The sooner the network returns to the previous timings, the better. Yes it had it's issues, but it could also recover much quicker and not leave lots of long gaps along very busy sections.

Same here, it’s not as if I didn’t know about the airline or whatever. I’ve flown on 4 of their aircraft after all, but I wouldn’t have necessarily linked the name of the stadium to a timed sponsorship of the stadium or whatever.

Which sounds weird, I know. I guess it’s simply because I’ve always known it as the Etihad Stadium, nothing else, and I have very little knowledge on that part of Manchester.

In terms of Metrolink, hopefully I’ll be back in Manchester soon to go and get that bay platform at Crumpsall done. The last bit of Metrolink that I want to get done, so it’s only a small part of a visit to the city. Hence putting it off as I want some good weather for the other stuff!
