With the Borders line now being electrified, I was thinking, has there been any other lines that have been previously closed, then reopened and electrified?
I can only think of two others, firstly in London, Blackfriars to Farringdon via the Snow Hill tunnel, I do not think this line was ever electrified before closure in 1971, this line reopened in 1988 as part of Thameslink.
Secondly, in South Wales, Aberdare to Abercynon, which was closed to passengers traffic in 1964 and then reopened for passengers in 1988, the coal trains from Tower Colliery kept this line open as freight only, so it never closed.
Any others please?

It's a bit technical but Garston (South Parkway)-Hunts Cross was closed for a period before reopening as third rail electrified Merseyrail, was it not? I seem to recall it being a longer period than simply the time taken to convert it?

If we accept closed simply for conversion, then I guess the Metrolink Oldham line?

Sections of the Manchester Metrolink and the Tyne and Wear Metro. Most of the WM tram system. Parts of the DLR.

Kettering to Corby was closed to passengers at one stage.

This might be bending it somewhat, but the Elizabeth line between near North Woolwich and Custom House, which was all previously the closed North Woolwich part of the North London line and is now the Elizabeth line with OHLE. If you want to bend it even further, the DLR from Canning Town-Stratford is on another part of that former line, but is of course light rail.

Stratford to Tottenham Hale via Lea Bridge closed for passengers in 1985 but has since reopened

West London Line Clapham Junction to Willesden Junction closed to regular passenger services in 1940 was fully electrified and reopened in 1980s
Going back in time Nunhead to Greenwich park line closed in 1917 but was reopened and electrified between Nunhead and Lewisham Road in the 1930s also Woodside to Selsdon closed in 1917 was electrified and reopened in 1935 but was finally closed in 1983
Edmonton Green to Cheshunt closed around 1915 was electrified and reopened in 1960

Bury St Junction-Cheshunt and Hertford North-Langley Junction were both closed to passengers then reopened and electrified. The former was electrified for the reopening in 1960.

Similarly, the line between Dalston Junction and wherever the new connection to the East London Line is.

Radyr to Cardiff Central via Ninian Park (if that ever carried a passenger service prior to 1988?)

Also Lichfield City to Lichfield TV.

That's a bit of a head-scratcher. IIRC there were 'football specials' between Cardiff General / Central and Ninian Park but those are still (unelectrified) NR metals.

Correction - Dalston Western Junction to Shoreditch

further down the line - Surrey Quays to Old Kent Road Junction was closed around 1917 and track lifted but was reopened for London Overground around 2008 (?dated uncertain)

The South Hylton branch closed in 1964 and reopened in 2002 although that is Metro rather than National rail.

Wolverhampton to Walsall was closed to passengers in 1965 but electrified in 1966. It reopened in 1998 then closed to passengers again in 2008. It has since reopened to passengers.

I'm afraid your statement is incorrect (on many levels) as the reopening and electrification of Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction didn't happen at the same time.*
In fact there was a rush hour service on part of the line (between Kensington Olympia and Clapham Junction) using a Class 73 or 33 with a EMU (or DEMU) was used before the Willesden Junction - Kensington Olympia section was reopened to a regular passenger service using displaced Network Southeast DMU's. With the electrification/electried service coming some years later (IIRC 1990's when the 3rd rail was extended to the new North Pole Eurostar depot).

*In fact the line was used for passenger use between 1940 and the reintroduction of regular passenger services under Network Southeast, with special services and the regular motorail service from Kensington Olympia (which I apparently used as a small child) and the Inter-City services which IIRC went Midlands to/from Dover (but was later switched to Ramsgate due to the channel tunnel opening).

Indeed, and was re-electrified after that at 25kv.

In fact, the whole North London Line has waxed and waned with electrification. With the majority of it in the 1980's being 3rd Rail and now it's 25kv.

Correct.

[Cressington] station closed in 1972 but reopened in 1978 as part of the Kirkby-Garston line of the Merseyrail system. Services were extended from Garston to Hunts Cross in 1983, and diverted to Southport instead of Kirkby in 1984.

(from Wikipedia)

I am not sure if they were closed and then the decision was reversed or it was all just mothballed.

At least the first two on this list are not electrified.

Indeed.
Olympia was my local station in summer 1983 and I had a job in West Croydon, shift work as a computer operator at Philips, City House (now flats) and I used the shuttle service when I could, it was a quaint backwater railway then. I think the evening service was booked 33+TC which went to Waterloo after its last working to form part of a Salisbury service.

The line was also used then for some cross-country services although they definitely didn’t stop at Olympia.

The XC services via Olympia (stopping) started in 1986
reference:

Before that they all went via Reading.

Were they routed through Olympia without stopping? I always assumed they would go across some part of what is now the SWR network (which I am admittedly not familiar with) to reach Reading.

Do some of the low numbered bay platforms at Leeds count?
