On my Aberdeen to Stevenage trip yesterday someone came round through first class at least once an hour collecting rubbish & emptying the bins.
The dirty crockery was collected several times -they changed everything (mugs/ teaspoons/mats etc) & wiped the tables prior to Newcastle.

Reading the postings, when it's good (attentive staff, plenty of drink and food in the week) it's good, when it's bad it's really bad. East Coast need to improve the weekend offering and consistency and they'll be there.

Maybe EC are running out of excuses now?
An upgrade voucher would have been more like it though.
At least my perseverance paid off in some way though.

Currently on the 08:56 from Darlo to the Cross and I'll say it again the new breakfast is pretty good but it really needs beans and black pudding to put it over the edge into very good.
Also I've noticed something amusing before 22 May when the crew were taking orders for food they had these fancy PDA type devices which they could enter the order onto and then send it straight back to the kitchen to be cooked. Now it seems that these PDAs have been removed and crews are having to write down orders on napkins and take them to the kitchen. Progress?

Grand Central are offering free return travel from London Kings Cross for 5-15 year olds, but it only applies for Standard Class.
Though on the ordering breakfast front, I don't care if they wrote my requests on a tablet, on a sheet of notepad or on the floor of the carriages, all that matters to me is that I get a decent breakfast, and I couldn't possibly fault East Coast for that.

The 'new' equipment was supposed to do exactly that, with a screen and printer terminal at the buffet end of the kitchen (theoretically capable of spewing out a long roll of orders) as they were taken from passengers.
There were 'issues'.
Napkins and pen are a well used and trusted part of the catering toolkit!
{but I'll decline the black pudding if that's ok by you guys}

I'd rather have black pudding than most items in a full english, however I can't stomach more than 3 slices

Double Maxim ain't much different. In any case, Dog is now brewed in Tadcaster
I like the real wine glass in their advertising. Isn't that a bit misleading?

To be fair I think that pic is accurate (although not travelled on a breakfast train yet since the changes). It's the easiest way to serve breakfast if most people are going for that option. It means you don't have to note everyone's preference (e.g. no tomatoes, mushrooms, etc).
e.g. if they ever do reintroduce baked beans I'd not like them anywhere near my plate, the sauce would taint the other food items it touched. As for black pudding a few extra slices please if they're going spare
I've been on two breakfast trains so far and have yet to see 'silver service' style delivery. Perhaps YorkshireRider could tell us if it's actually done?
One hour after leaving Edinburgh, no food or cold drinks. Also air-con in coach J of HST faulty and a toilet that has 'no flush 12/8' scratched into the label was open for use and still did not flush.

No such stock or service trouble on this service. The fruit juice isn't up to much tho, very disappointing.

I'm travelling 1st Class on the 12.30pm Kings Cross to York on a Monday in September. According to their website I should be offered the following:

Its more of a hot snack then a full meal, it will be either a cauliflower cheese tart, beetroot risotto, goats cheese and red onion tart or feta and red pepper tart, all served with a bit of salad. These dishes go through a 4 week rotation.

Its never a problem on a weekend as the sandwiches are in a packet, its during the week when some staff are not giving the full 4 usually out of lazyiness because they have to replenish from the kitchen more often.

The company says its up to the crew how they want to serve it, some do, some dont, depends if you have enough staff to do it. Also some breakfast trains dont have a chef, they have the 'CSA' breakfasts, which are pre packed, and pre cooked and just loaded into the oven to be heated up, then you just turn them over onto a plate. I think off the top of my head there is only the 0640, 0700 and 0715 trains off Leeds which do silver serve, i cant comment on any other depot.
Oh, I was hoping for something a bit more substantial. On their sample menu they've got things like Vegetable Biryani and salad, and Crayfish and noodle salad listed.
Also is the "free" coffee instant or filter?
