Early observations this morning see the semi regular 1D01 Kettering - Nottingham and the inevitable 1P22 Melton Mowbray - St Pancras cancelled again.
1B10 5 car vice 10, in fact I can't at first glance see any 10 car workings this morning.

They haven't reached the dizzy height of 'semi' recently; cancelled 4 days out of 5 last week.

1Y17 cancelled at STP because of a door problem

1F56 cancelled at Derby (222020) with the return leg starting from Chesterfield instead of Sheffield due to a fault

Never great when the replacement fleet are also having problems - 1D66 (810011) cancelled at East Mids Parkway after a brake problem.

Are 1D01 and 1P22 always being cancelled simply because they don’t have enough units to allow for 10-car operations, and these services rely on it?

Pretty much. It's the least worst decision because it inconveniences the least amount of people and results in the least amount of cancellations

I’m sure the people relying on these services disagree though, but that’d happen no matter what services are canned.

1D01 is the first inter city service of the morning to Leicester and Nottingham, three quarters of an hour before the next.
Their reliability is very poor - they were cancelled 80% of last week.
I think that anyone who relied on these services to make an early arrival would have given up long ago and made alternative arrangements. That means they won't be returning by train either.
Next step - withdrawn because, surprisingly, no-one uses them.
Shortage solved!

And 1D01 then forms the NOT - STP via Melton / Corby so knock on affects all around unless a spare unit can be found at Etches Park to do it which is highly unlikely or i suppose the original service would have gone ecs to Kettering in the first place.

I was on 1F45 1402 St Pancras International to Sheffield, unit 222017, joining at Leicester for Sheffield, and when we were a little over a mile North of the station it sounded like the engine under coach D (composite) coughed and spluttered to a halt, and silence descended. Shortly after we came to a halt with nothing ahead of us, and I assumed the two were connected; but it turned out to be a bridge strike** at Gypsy lane (nearly 2 miles North of Leicester) which we were soon allowed to pass over at walking pace.

However, the engine under coach D never seemed to restart before we got to Sheffield, despite which we didn't lose any more time. Unit was 222017. I wonder how many engines we were left with?

** Bridge strike aftermath was visible passing over the bridge; a very sorry flimsy looking crushed lorry looked as if had come off far worse than the bridge.

Just got to ride past Etches Park, and these were the observations I noticed:
• 222004 was still in its full 7 car formation (not reduced to 5)
• 222007 was nowhere in sight, evidently the Christmas tree is back in the loft.
• 222103 had its cab nose housing and body shell removed and replaced by a blue tarp, with the shell on the ground outside the sheds.

I expected the first 2 things, but not to see 103 in that state. What going on with it, presuming some major repairs but does anyone have further details (and if/when it’ll be back into service)?

Not sure when 004 is supposed to leave as it should have done a while back now
007 is going through extensive repairs to the galley and the cab (mainly electrical and under floor repairs). Rumours flying round internally that this is still yet to take a long while
103 was involved in a fatality a fortnight ago damaging the cab end, hence the tarpaulin covering it. Not sure whether the cab shell outside the shed has come from the unit or is the replacement to go onto the unit

Well, 004 had a schedule for today (5R61) but it didn’t leave and was canned for PL - Planned not to run.

The spare cab part on the floor did look very shiny, so presumably a new one.

What exactly happened to 007?

Surely EMR's responsibility is solely to hand them back in a serviceable standard? Not to start lengthening / shortening?

I think it’s just for convenience, EMR send a unit out with 7, a unit out with 6, then whoever is refurbing the units take one from the 7 and put it in he 5 in the factory/workshop. Means there’s no spare carriages left in the workshops taking up space, and maybe EMR can do something with any spares (what idk though)

Which ones would they be then?
The future plans are mentioned in post #321 of this thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/first-rail-stirling-lumo-rolling-stock.283347/page-11, but for now I believe 005 and 002 are 5 cars, and maybe 001 (however with that being painted, it may be 6 by now). The rest are 7.

001, 002 & 003 left EMR as 7 car units. 005 left as a 5 car unit. They have all left in the same formation that they operated for EMR in. 004 will do the same.

The reforms that have happened have all been done after coming off lease and departing EMR.

Failed in the middle of the line between Bedford and Kettering on a passenger service on Feb 1, had to detrain in situ and return to depot, never returned since
Yes. I am aware of that incident. It was never made clear exactly what the fault was that required evacuation. Now it is said that there are underfloor and electrical repairs which suggests a major failure somewhere, possibly a thermal event? An issue with the generator unit or traction electrical equipment perhaps?

002 is as a 5-car unit at the moment, just watched it pass Nuneaton on the cameras, tried a screenshot:

Also, I got the pictures of what's happening with 222103 at the moment, the unit without the nose housing and what appears to be a new one by the shed:

Yes, looks like 19 Class 222's out today. With four Class 810's out, does that mean all diagrams have traction assigned today?

Yes, the only exception is the one diagram that's been suspended since around September, this would provide another unit to allow 0630 SHF-STP, and 1732 STP-SHF to operate as a double.

Two engines have failed on 222014 operating 1D53 1535 St Pancras International to Nottingham, which is standing room only after 1F52 1531 St Pancras International to Sheffield left with people physically sitting on tables due to overcrowding. The public's opinion of EMR must be very poor today after the 810 door failure in Nottingham, and this certainly hasn't helped.

222007 has failed at Market Harborough while forming 1D08 0633 St Pancras International to Nottingham.
Currently blocking the line with 1F10 and 1D11 sat behind it.
RTT says "a problem with the traction equipment (MD)."

Corby diversions are already in action, plus some cancellations etc. of course.

Edit: Failed unit now on the move north as 5D08.

Just gone through Leicester. Seemed like only on 2 or 3 engines heading to Etches Park inevitably.

After so much time out of action, this should have been like a new unit. There was more than enough time to thoroughly fettle up the unit and fix all the faults. What is going wrong? These engines are usually reliable units.

Sometimes when you try and fix a fault, the acid test as to whether it has worked is only once it enters an in traffic environment, unfortunately.
