Does anyone have any insight into why it's taking significantly longer for the 3-car units to enter service than the 2-cars...? It's been over 2 months since 175101 went down and 175114 has been at LA since mid-December.

I suspect it may be case of getting more trains into service quicker. Focusing on the 2-car units gives 3 trains for every 6 vehicles completed verse 2 trains with 3-car units.

There are no 175/1 working diagrams that require them to be out in traffic. Moot point as the majority of them are stopped anyway for ongoing maintenance post storage, exam work and waiting parts.
The only advantage I can see is they can have a four car train to practise coupling and uncoupling and working as a pair. A three car will have to be tried coupled with a two car soon.
What's in a TOPS number anyway? If I recall correctly, many of the class 175 units are not in their as-built formations. If so, it's possible that half of what was once '175008' is now part of a different unit and '175008' could therefore be in two different locations at once depending on exactly how you choose to define '175008'.

175004 isn't even 175004 anymore, both of its carriages are from 175109!
The half of 175008 that was seen at Wolverton is in 175101, the other half is the fire damaged one, the good half replaced the damaged one from 101, so basically a straight swap on those two.

Thanks for posting the car numbers within the units as I had forgotten how many "hybrid units" we actually had in the fleet at the end, just over a quarter.
