Meeting between bosses yesterday and they are hoping platforms 3-6 for reopening for tail-end of next week.

By that point, why not open all of it?
Because there's probably a reason why platforms 1 & 2 can't be opened yet - given, if my geography is correct, they are the platforms nearest the fire. (only been to Glasgow once so not familiar with the station layout).

Perhaps someone with the correct knowledge can precisley state why Platform 1 and 2 can't open. Most of the building has been demolished now.

Within a day or two, the remaining bits of the building will be demolished and a few days later the rubble should be cleared up to a point, so the main entrance can't be far off opening...

If there are structural concerns regarding the station around platform 1 and 2, the I doubt the rest of the station would be open.

The water damage and external fire damage to the station will be worst around 1&2 and there will likely need to a significant amount of fire glass replaced

Maybe they need to check/replace some of those roof glass panels?

Platform 1 & 2 are still some distance from the fire so I doubt it’s a structural issue. Probably to do with controlling passenger numbers and flow/movement around the station.

I arrived on one of the first AWC trains to arrive after the reopening - not in P2, but P8. From P3 on any passenger can be made to walk west to the designated exit/entry point of the Vehicle Ramp. P1 & 2 don’t permit this and you get closer to the affected area. It’s fun going down the ramp and seeing the impressive Caledonian Railway logo, The numbers of staff on duty was x10 the usual.

The part of the concourse accessing these platforms is right next to the site of the fire. I assume the station wall is considered sound, as any collapse of that could bring down large parts of the roof. But as someone suggested above some of the glass panels may be in a dangerous condition which might prevent anyone using these platforms.

The part of the concourse isnt. Its the office buildings in the corner that are adjacent. Access to the platforms, and the platforms themselves should be fine.

P1 and 2 traffic can - and is regularly whenever there's a ScotRail train using the platforms as they want SR tickets to be checked by a gateline - be redirected to same gatelines as P3/4 by walking behind the buffers.

There’s an iron fence circa 60’s to prevent this. Unless you plan to squeeze through the coffee stall. P1&2 has no gateline and there’s no way to get to P3/4 without going through the concourse.

When Lanark or Edinburgh bound ScotRail Trains are using p1 or p2, they most definitely do direct passengers through the gateline at 3/4 and round to p1/p2.

They simply barrier off p1/2 from the concourse, open the double access gate next to the buffers and passengers walk behind the Starbucks kiosk to the gateline.

I assure you there is most definitely a wide walking path connecting 1/2 and 3/4 behind the buffers of 2 and 3. I, and everyone else on my train, use it every single time I get a ScotRail train from 1/2 since they put in barriers to block people walking straight in/out the Avanti way and make everyone go through the 3/4 gateline.

to block people walking straight out the Avanti way
So what do Avanti passengers do? If the route is now a recognised path, they can take down the P1&P2 sign directing people away from the P3P4 gateline From the concourse. Either way, they clearly don’t want passengers near the buffers until the emergency is over.

So what do Avanti passengers do?
Normal operation at platforms 1 and 2 outside whatever's happening with the fire is:
  • If there is an Avanti train boarding or alighting, then the path straight out to the concourse is left open, avoiding a gateline
  • If there is no Avanti train boarding and alighting - generally if there's a ScotRail service to Lanark or Edinburgh - then the path straight out to the concourse is blocked with temporary barriers, and all passengers are routed behind the 2/3 buffers through the 3/4 gateline
The point is, is that there is an official route to force passengers to/from P 1/2 to the 3/4 gateline that is easy to set up and is used very frequently throughout every day under normal circumstances.

Bit of a stupid question to ask are the ticket machines back in operation at the station? Planning on going to Largs but wasn’t sure if the machines are in operation or as backup use Glasgow Queen Street machines?

I arrived and departed from Central on Friday early afternoon and the flow of passengers through the station seemed to be operating smoothly with no pinch points or congestion anywhere. I noticed on my return journey the platform for my train was on the departure board approximately 18 minutes before its departure so there was no need to wait in the limited concourse area.

I noticed on TRAKSY that there are 3x EMUs stabled on platform 9 and have been since the station partially re-opened and I noticed their presence on Friday - anyone know the reason platform 9 does not appear to be in use.

Thank you for the information, I’m visiting Glasgow for the week and thought to go out that way for a change, I’m also aware of having to switch at Kilwinning (and back) but it’s good to know the machines are at least in operation

There's also a couple machines and a small ticket office downstairs in the Low Level concourse.

I’ve never used the low level before.

I’m I right to say I be best going in via Hope Street than say Argyll Street?
