I did wonder if to replace the 84 with a run from Crawley to East Grinstead via Buxshalls on the 272 and 270 for better views from the Top Deck
If the connection works that might be worthwhile, that section of the 270 is very scenic, though it has to be single-deck due to 2 low bridges, one of which (under the Bluebell Railway) you would pass under.

However the 84 is also pretty, and one of the more difficult routes to work in the area - steep hills and tight bends near Weir Wood Reservoir. (when it went "round the Cat" - West Hoathly village - it was even worse!)

Your choice!

New electroliners!
(Image is definitely not mine it is from facebook)
In my opinion the front is especially weird and on the nearside, the proportions of bh5 are even worse than the repainted 800s, although i guess the offside is alright. I am no expert but it looks even more distorted than before. Why can't they just have the headlight to be turquoise instead of black and can't they have consistent swooshes on the livery? It appears that they have the newer seating and offside destination display and i have heard they are to be fitted with camera mirror instead but i have no idea.

Oh, they're Electroliners? I thought they were getting Enviros. Yeah, I'm not sure who has been doing the recent B&H liveries, but I've always felt they are a bit amateurish around the edges. I am actually surprised they're using the BH5 livery, I half expected a special livery for their new electric buses.

I suspect they'll get some branding on top of the base livery.

I really miss the old route branding but I guess fair enough on why they would want to get rid of it.

Also, any information on the new route 500 from Eastbourne to Gatwick?
I think its replacing route 54 and 261, but I am not sure.

Correct, no clue when it's starting but from what i've heard it'll run out of Crawley, although some duties will be staffed by B&H's Eastbourne depot.

It will indeed replace the 54 and 261 as stated by the ESCC in the above link, funded mostly by ESCC, WSCC and Gatwick Airport and sounds like it'll run from early till late. I doubt it'll run 24-hours a day, it'll probably be similar operating times to the 400.

I would expect the 500 and the night buses included in the same document to start in Early April as thats when the funding starts. That is a guess though.

Am I right in thinking that the 54 and 261 are run by B&H rather than Metrobus? In which case, will the current complement of the 54 and 261 transfer to Crawley, and if so will these be sufficient to provide the 500 service. Or are new buses expected for this service? And Metrobus are still short of buses at the moment due to the Hydrogen bus incident.

Compass Bus run the 261 currently.

The Electric buses for Conway St are currently in final production and will be delivered soon - although when they can be in service is a different question. That may help with vehicles

Compass run the 261, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 3 Regency B9TLs allocated to the 54 currently transfer to Metrobus after the route becomes the 500. Not necessarily for the 500, but the rest of the batch is already with Metrobus and those 3 probably would be too if they didn't take over the 54.

I'm looking at the faretables for the 28 and 54 and the availability of PlusBus tickets on those routes. The 28 claims to accept Tunbridge Wells Plus Bus tickets for the section of route between Tunbridge Wells and Broadwater Down and the 54 claims to accept Brighton Plus Bus Tickets for the whole route. Since the 28 doesn't go anywhere near Tunbridge Wells and the 54 doesn't go anywhere near Brighton, I assume these are mistakes. I am also assuming that it's Eastbourne PlusBus tickets that are valid on at least part of these routes. Can anyone confirm the out-of-Eastbourne boundary points?

The 28 always used to go to Tunbridge Wells. From 2005 to 2023 it went there in early mornings and late evening and sundays. It was only 2023 when the 28 ceased to serve Tunbridge Wells. So they have clearly not bothered to update the faretable.

Tunbridge Wells Plusbus is valid between Tunbridge Wells Town Centre and Broadwater Down on the 29 and 29A and 29X routes.

Eastbourne Plusbus is valid between Eastbourne Town Centre and Lower Horsebridge Pay Gate Cottages on both the 28 and 54 routes.

Eastbourne is quite a generous plusbus scheme extending all the way out in to Hailsham too.

I'd suspect it is just a simple copy and paste error between the 28 and 29 faretables if they were split out, and the Tunbridge Wells line on the 28 should be replaced by the Eastbourne one. A quick e-mail to B&H alerting them to the error will probably see it fixed quite quickly.

We really do need to move away from the assumption that bus company staff "can't be bothered" every time something slips through. It's a little tedious, and frankly, unlikely to be true.

I’m intrigued to know how they have managed to squeeze two wheelchair bays and a minimum of four accessible seats into a dual door bus! I’m sure all will become clear soon.

What's the news on progress with the Hydrogen buses?
Something was posted on a Facebook enthusiasts group a few days ago (which appeared to be an excerpt from a staff newsletter, as slightly fuzzy):

"[...] Investigations into earlier technical issues have now concluded (although not publicly available) [...] We are hopeful that hydrogen vehicles will begin re-entering service before mid-year (TBC) [...]"

I assume that Metrobus still have around 40 buses sourced from elsewhere to cover the Hydrogen buses. If we will not see a resolution for around another four months, are these buses on long-term hire, or will they be rotated and re-sourced as necessary? Have B&H or Metrobus got any new buses arriving shortly, such that the buses due to leave can be retained for a few more months?

Lastly, is it right to assume Wrights are picking up the tab, but Metrobus may well be sourcing them?

There are 20+ Electroliners due in the coming months at Conway St, which theoretically would allow some Streetdecks to possibly be cascaded, temporarily.

The mood music from above makes it sound like they may not be available in time however

With the announcement that First in Aberdeen are going to discontinue their hydrogen buses, there are 25 22-reg Streetdecks up for grabs. Would Metrobus be interested in them if the price was right? I think Metrobus have got some more on order, but would they have any need for even more? Can the refuelling facilities cope with any more? Could they see off some of their older double deckers?

I would think it’s more likely that the Aberdeen buses will be rebuilt as battery-electric vehicles.

AFAIK the vehicles are owned by Surrey County Council, not Metrobus.

They were funded by Surrey County Council, not purchased, I misunderstood my source. Funding also came from West Sussex CC, DfT and Gatwick Airport. Apologies.

ZEBRA funding is always made to the local transport authority (in this case Surrey County Council) which then passes it on to operators. In the case of Metrobus I think that the 34 buses used on routes 430, 435, 420, 460 and 480 are owned by the council and leased to the operator. I do recall seeing some papers from an SCC meeting that mentioned this but can’t find them now. This feature (from CBW) appears to support my recollection though - https://cbwmagazine.com/surrey-invests-in-hydrogen-buses/

Just saw a whole bunch of Metrobuses parked up at the Broyle Place depot near Ringmer from the top deck of the 28, and pretty sure they were the Hydroliners.

Are the double deckers with a green band near the rear the hydrodeckers? In which case, I'm sure I have seen a few out in recent days, e.g. the 400

Edit: LV74CEX is currently out on the 400 (19.64 on 7th March)

I saw a single decker in Fastway blue colours that I am pretty sure was a hydrogen one heading north under its own power on the M40 on Friday. Hopefully there is a plan to fix them.

The ones I saw were single decker, looked like there were around 5-8 of them but it was hard to see

I didn't think the single deckers were affected - unless a common fault has been found.
It's the single deckers that are withdrawn, the doubles are still running. They have been much more common on the 400 recently, with the usual assortment on other Surrey routes, though there seem to be more white hired-in single deckers lately and fewer exotic GA buses.
