9 carriage train advertised on the screens and on public websites.

5 carriages locked out of use. Apparently they are "only hitching a lift from newcastle to Bristol to get to the depot for maintenance"

All passengers paying a fortune crammed into half the space. 3 in first class. Train not declassified.

This company wants closing down. Just stop running until you can offer a decent service.

Argh!

Another day. Another tiny xc train loaded to the gunwales.

Close this company down until they can offer a proper service. 4 carriage trains are insufficient. Just stop. Give up. Go home

At the very least rip first class out and us ethe space for seats for passengers who have to stand.

In seriousness:

Get things sorted out so when you offer a 9 car train passengers can actually use 9 cars
Get an order in for 100 x 9 car (minimum) bi mode trains now.
Just order more Hitachi ones. Sign the papers TODAY.
Remove first class. Those people can stand next to toilet for a few hours.
Every spare voyager assigned to XC now. This second. Instantly.

At a minimum I want all the spare yoyager in service tomorrow. Whatever it takes get it done or don't come to work on Wednesday

A few years ago I boarded a northbound Saturday morning XC train at Sheffield booked for Newcastle. At the time cheap 1st class upgrades were usually available, paid on the train. It looked to be a good deal so I went to sit in an unreserved 1st class seat. At the time there were only 2 other occupants in the carriage. The guard was very reluctant to take my money saying it was a busy train. It did get busier at Leeds. At York masses of Japanese or Chinese tourists joined and filled almost every seat bound for Edinburgh.

Managing such capacity is where the likes of Seatfrog and split ticketing now come in. Like a hotel wants both bed occupancy and room rates as high as possible.

You can build new hotel rooms a lot quicker than new trains, tracks and platforms, not least because planning for anything rail related takes ages and available sites are limited.

I too want all carriages that run to be available for use.

On a recent journey from Cheltenham to Chesterfield all 9 were - until Derby where the 5 car set was detached and we all had to cram into 4. On another journey in the opposite direction in a well filled 5 car train we were all turfed out at Derby to cram into a 4 car set to continue standing.

At least the availability of 1st exists at a price and I for one will always consider paying extra for a seat. If XC can't make 1st pay they're ticketing practices need tightening up.

XC First class pricing is so high those passengers are likely subsidising everyone else onboard!

Except Seatfrog will usually offer a much cheaper price and a significant number of first passengers are taking advantage, as were both the person opposite me and myself on a recent journey. But Seatfrogging may need a thread of it's own.

I strongly disagree with removing first class as with the current rolling stock it would not solve the capacity problems and lower revenue due to not likely encouraging any new users.
Why should there not be an option for people to pay more to have a more comfortable journey on some of Britain's longest journeys.
I agree the current situation with Cross Country is far from ideal and something needs sorting either in the form of new stock ordered or all available Voyagers moving to Cross Country, but removing first class would not solve the capacity issues and given the first class prices revenue would likely drop meaning even less money for improvements.
In extreme crowding cases I am not saying first class should not be declassified, as it where people are physically struggling to board, but it should only be done when there no other reasonable option on a given service.

Go and stand in the door way for your entire journey and come back and talk about this.

Get rid of first class, put more seats in and give more people a seat. I am sick of standing. Time for the first class passengers to find out what it is really like.

It is a disgrace that the train is ram packed in 3 carriages while first has a handful of people in it. An absolute disgrace.

It is also a disgrace that people defend this nonsense!

Btw explain to me how an extra carriage of seats for all passengers on every train ( 2 on a double set) would NOT help with overcrowding!

I would stop that to. If we have to have first class then you should pay an proper price. No discounts, no Railcards, no upgrades!

Most XC trains I've used recently have been very full in first.

Yesterday the 08.56 ex Sheffield had every first class seat taken and the 17.30 back from Birmingham had only a couple of seats free.

So? I would still get rid. I am sick of standing. You should have heard the chuntering in my doorway yesterday about the cost of tickets and the lack of seats.

I repeat: a disgrace and it makes the railway look stupid when passengers have to stand for hours while there are empty seats in the posh section!)

(And first wasn't full on the train I was on!)

Clearly if the trains are oversubscribed then the fares are too cheap.

Which just goes to show how bad XC's overcrowding is.

The fares XC charge are absolutely eye-watering, even when booking increasingly improbable concoctions of Super-Off-Advance-Peak-Splitting-at-Penzance tickets to take advantage of every last trick in the book.

I just don't see how it is that XC can constantly cram passengers like they're cosplaying a bad version of the Tokyo Metro, and charge daylight robbery "to limit demand" in one breath, yet claim there's "not enough demand" for new trains in the next. And I also don't see how it can be that they never seem to have any money in one breath, yet constantly cram passengers like they're cosplaying a bad version of the Tokyo Metro and charge daylight robbery in the next. Sounds to me like Arriva/DB is doing some creative Hollywood Accounting...

Removing First and replacing it with Standard would only add an extra 16 seats however, by my calcs. It would be better than nothing, but it wouldn't come close to sorting out the overcrowding. Really though, they urgently need more trains. Whether it's new IETs, FLIRTs, or cascaded 22x stock, they urgently need new trains. Hell, I would take decrepit Mk2s hauled by whatever motley selection of freight locos is available at this point.

I'm not.
That was always BR policy.
I understand that but prices on xc already seem pretty high AND the service offered for that price unacceptably low.

I don't think, morally, you could go much higher without serious improvement! Maybe start with not locking half a train out of use........

Agreed but that is 16 more people sat on a seat and not on the dirty floor.

More importantly it says: we get it, we know things are bad and we are trying to help and improve your journey. At present we can't do much but we can do this

Devils advocate, if you are sick of standing and First is empty then maybe it is time to pay the extra?

Removing First would add a few seats but likely increase everyone else's fares AND see passengers (like me who pay for First so I can work) shift modes. Not sure it's the answer.

Sadly, some of us don't have daddy's money/trust funds/a company credit card for that.

£650 for a Bristol-Sheffield return in First, bloody hell! I'm fairly certain you could hire a limousine and chauffer for the day, for that money!

Split ticketing will get that down significantly, a month out it will be £214 which is a bit lumpy but not horrific for around 6 hours of travel.

It's my own company so the cost comes from my pocket, ultimately. ;)

Simmer down. It's totally accepted that XC have a capacity problem, but it doesn't exist on every train on every part of every route at all times of every day.

All public transport suffers from this basic issue - as do roads! More people will travel and report on the busiest trains. Few will feel the need to report trains that are all but empty but they do exist.

XC are probably getting more units. That's the factor that infuriates me. The carriages exist. We know they're needed. They're being parked up to do nothing for months before refurbishments are completed - if they're taken on. Then there aren't enough staff to crew them.

Being the railway, if it were decided to order brand new stock it's doubtful if any would be operating reliably before 2035. By which time the travel market will have moved on - that's the way it is. Units designed and ordered now will be expected to keep running beyond 2070. What's more any new stock may be incompatible with the orders being placed by other TOCs. Bus fleet operation must be a doddle in comparison.

From my experience XC could be carrying a lot more at busy times - but they'd be running around for large parts of their journeys with many empty seats giving their accountants nightmares. I hope the extra units will all be refurbished and deployed by the end of 2027. I forecast that even if they are all deployed by 2030 they'll be inadequate to cope with the extra loads that will have grown by then.

Here's the problem; in all my time travelling with XC, whether it be the crack of dawn, midnight wind-down, lunchtime, post lunchtime, or any other time one would consider Off-Peak, I've almost never seen an XC service which didn't have at least a few people left standing. In fact I can count on one finger how many times I've seen a relatively empty-ish train in all my years with them.

I have never seen such consistently awful Off-Peak overcrowding with any operator that wasn't XC.

Go and stand in the door way for your entire journey and come back and talk about this.
I have travelled on Cross Country services where I have had to stand in a crowded vestibule area. I would still not want first class to be removed as it provides an option for a more comfortable journey, which I sometimes pay for on services I know will be especially busy.

Get rid of first class, put more seats in and give more people a seat. I am sick of standing. Time for the first class passengers to find out what it is really like.
I am sure some first class passengers have experienced standing as I have spoken with other passengers multiple times who have stated they have paid for first class this time because had to stand last time they travelled.

It is a disgrace that the train is ram packed in 3 carriages while first has a handful of people in it. An absolute disgrace.
I have been on many services where first class has been fully occupied, and even some instances where first class passengers, who have paid for first class, have not been able to get a first class seat.

It is also a disgrace that people defend this nonsense!

Btw explain to me how an extra carriage of seats for all passengers on every train ( 2 on a double set) would NOT help with overcrowding!
Removing first class alone would not likely increase demand so it would be the same passengers spreading out more.
Like I previously mentioned if Standard is dangerously overcrowded and/or passengers are genuinely struggling to board I would understand first class being declassified on that service, as most train operators will do.

On double sets they will rarely be overcrowded so there would be no need to remove first class as the double set itself provides the extra capacity. I do accept that to many times the second set is locked out of use and this needs sorting.

If its just that you have to stand in standard, but not in an unsafe way, then you could pay for first class. Many passengers across the country have to stand.
To clarify I do not think its acceptable for Cross Country to operate with such short 4/5 carriage trains, but until something is done about it removing first class is not the answer.

I would stop that to. If we have to have first class then you should pay an proper price. No discounts, no Railcards, no upgrades!
On services where first class usually has high occupancy I agree on fewer discounted advance fares. But if a service usually has spare seats in first class there is no reason not to offer them at a reduced price through advances, seatfrog...

Some railcards already do not give first class discounts on flexible fares.
However, I do not agree railcards should be excluded from first class as by that logic they should not allow them in standard as fewer people may travel, working towards solving overcrowding.

It’s not really a company in the sense you seem to think it is; at least, not one with freedom of action or the ability to make decisions. It’s more an arm of government, conveniently (and cunningly, some might say!) disguised as a private company in order to deflect any adverse PR. Which seems to be working!

Don’t think it’s XC claiming there’s not enough demand to justify new /extra trains. Need to look a bit closer to Whitehall for that.

And presumably no staff on passes either, I should just occupy a standard class seat instead - Not sure how that would help!

I understand your anger, I too have seen and travelled on grossly overcrowded trains (not just on XC) but the solution is not to disadvantage some passengers for not really much benefit, but to improve the service offered - Fully staffed trains, more and longer trains in future. However this has to be paid for, I would suggest complaining to MPs, repeatedly, might be a start.

I am sure some first class passengers have experienced standing

As I did today! My choice however, and only from Banbury to Oxford. Which illustrates one of the conundrums of the whole XC operation, a long distance Inter-City service which also serves as a local link. Discussed before, possibly.....

I certainly don't agree with the idea of removing First Class on the Voyagers.
What I do question however is how busy is First Class in general at Weekends?
I realise it could vary route by route on Cross Country but my suggestion would be to offer Weekend First Upgrades at Weekends and Bank Holidays on routes where First Class isn't well utilised and to also stop preventing holders of Standard Class Advance tickets from upgrading with Weekend First Upgrades.

(I'm only suggesting the above on the assumption that it would relieve a little pressure on Standard Class and not overcrowd First Class)

Last week I took the train from Bristol to Exeter. Southbound was a double set (2 x 4) but my carriage only had about 10 in it. Coming north on the 1727 from Exeter, the train was a 4-car but I got 2 seats to myself.

I understand that CrossCountry does get very busy, but there was a challenge to name a time when the trains are not too busy.

While a limited sample on Sundays every time I have used mid morning to early afternoon departures from Birmingham New Street in all 4 Cross Country Voyager route directions first class has been full or very near full.
In fact the only time I have not been able to get a seat in first class on Cross Country has been on Saturday evening and Sunday morning services.
