I wish that they’d get rid of that eyesore of a chimney. It was probably useful when there was a coal fired boiler but, now that they use gas for heating, it could be demolished in favour of a smaller, less conspicuous tubular exhaust or even upgrade to heat-pumps.
Looking at the artist’s impression, it’s nice of them to provide a canopy over Pie Demand’s bakery doors. Or are they being relocated?

This is phase 2, planning application 25/0701 - to create the much larger car park and Rail Replacement Bus lane, stops and parking. Similar to plan I posted some months ago but with some detail changes.
Phase 1 was planning application 24/0737, Cumberland Council, Carlisle planning section.

Your "eyesore" is someone else's "industrial heritage feature".

I love that chimney. It would be great if the could put a BR double arrow on it but I imagine it is not allowed under the listing.

Lancaster Brewery is transforming a historic room on platform 4 at Carlisle Station into Scott & Brassey, a heritage-themed venue.

I missed doing the recent Avanti WCML diversions over the S&C due to various factors, so I'm planning to try in April when they're on again. I'll be sure to allow enough time to sample a pint or two here!

In the heady early days of HS2 proposals, there was big plans for raised service frequencies and 400m trains splitting at Carlisle, with enhancements including a new through platform on the west side taking up some of the sidings area, so that Whitehaven line trains, etc., did not conflict.

Also for a huge Scotland/NW England maintenance/servicing depot just over the border at Kirkpatrick Fleming.

Substantial funds have been found for environmental/nimby considerations and new stations in the south and midlands.

My bold but highly wishful thinking was that HS2-led expansion could be an opportunity to improve the Carlisle station appearance and passenger comfort, and to recreate a distinctive regional architectural landmark and amenity, by using modern materials and methods to reinstate the glorious full-length Victorian overall trainshed roof cutback and its Gothic/cathedral style ends removed in the 1950s.

The characteristic supporting walls which held the roof are still there on both sides.

I accept the HS2 service plans beyond Birmingham are now back-to-the drawing board. But if the current station redevelopment plans necessitate reducing the height of some of the west-side wall, it would be a shame if this prevented such a future possibility.

28? I guess it will be like the excellent bar on Chester station which has a few real ales, maybe even 8, and loads of "craft" beer taps for the pasteurised keg stuff.
(The article says 3 real ales plus a "keg wall!" That would suit me - fewer handpumps means a quicker turnover and no risk of stale ale!)

It’s not that wall that’s having its height reduced (unless I’ve missed something) it’s the one on the west side of the carpark. It’s also being shortened at the south end.

Matalan, who have a store at the Station Business Park, James Street, have displayed a sign that the shop will close on March 7.

It is believed that the closure is due to the planned demolition of the retail park where the store stands, due to the Carlisle Station Gateway scheme.

Laavely. Being run by Lancaster Brewery and my experiences of their Tite and Locke (amongst other, non-railway station based establishments of theirs) fills me with confidence. Would have liked to have visited in combination with a trip behind 'Sir Nigel Gresley' next month, but unfortunately it's not to be and I will have to wait a little longer for another opportunity/excuse.

I consider it the finest cider to come out of an industrial premises in Birmingham, from the people that also brought Frosty Jack's to the world. Looks like a "real" alternative is also available in Carlisle based on the image and your comment above.

Ah, Frosty Jack's! I used to drink that many, many years ago when I had no taste in cider and just wanted to get hammered cheaply!
