Can't remember the ports when i took a ferry from Java to Bali, i do remember the rust bucket being followed by sharks all the way across, and a cat-sized rat which sat on my foot

Dieppe yes that's it thanks! It was on a school trip so my memories are a little faded now.

We have the usual RUKF definition issues.

For my list I have defined a 'port' as the departure, calling or terminal point of a journey over tidal water (other than a tidal river less than 1 mile) made using a vessel which was making a scheduled journey open to the public, the vessel being carrying both passengers and cargo larger than luggage carried by hand by passengers (counting cars as such cargo), and excluding chain ferries and trips where the vessel returned to the starting point without calling anywhere else on route.

My first ever cross - channel was Folkestone - Calais (and return) in 1980 -complete with boat train to the Harbour.

Quite so - several lists here include ports which no longer have public services today, so ports still in use but which have changed nationality since being visited should not be exempt.

After seeing some others, a supplementary list of edge cases outside the above .....

- freshwater but meets all other criteria: Friedrichshafen, Romanshorn

- not carrying cargo beyond hand luggage, journeys on open sea: Bournemouth, Caldey Island, Swanage, Tenby

- not carrying cargo beyond hand luggage, sheltered tidal waters other than tidal rivers: Brownsea Island, Falmouth, intra-Scilly Isles ferries (all inhabited islands), St Mawes, Sandbanks, (treating water such as the Dart estuary, Percuil River, and the Kingsbridge Estuary as tidal rivers but the broader Carrick Roads [Falmouth - St Mawes] as sheltered tidal water)

- freshwater lakes (not rivers) and not carrying cargo beyond hand luggage, but vessels large enough for est. 40+ passengers: Attersee, Fraueninsel (Chiemsee), Ebensee, Gmuden, Gstadt am Chiemsee, Herreninsel (Chiemsee), Konstanz, Prien am Chiemsee (+narrow-gauge boat train), St Gilgen, St Wolfgang, Strobl, Wiessenbach am Attersee
