Presumably 700s being scheduled to run some services routinely retains driver knowledge?
Only Cambridge and Kings Lynn drivers sign north of Cambridge, and only Cambridge drivers sign 700s, Kings Lynn do not. So whenever 700s have been used north of Cambridge, it's been with
a Cambridge driver.
Cambridge drivers routinely drive 700s on the route to London or Brighton, so there is no traction retention reason that a 700 must go north of Cambridge at any time.

King's Lynn drivers can drive them south of Cambridge. They used to drive 313s, and went to Moorgate. They probably still do the same with 717s.

Kings Lynn only sign 387s and 379s. They used to sign 313s and Moorgate up until 2017, when they lost Moorgate, and 2018 when they lost all 313 work. Cambridge and Peterborough lost their Moorgate and 313 work at the same time.

Thanks for the info. No wonder the GN is in such a mess with loss of flexibility. I hope everyone still signs Hertford.

Just catching up on what going on with these units: -
I am just catching up with my 2025 records.

In case it is any help with GN entry into service dates, I travelled on 379024 (with 379001) on 23/06/25 and 379025 with 379028 on 23/09/25.

Not true. KLN drivers only sign Class 379 and 387 units
My mistake has already been pointed out. Although clearly there is no need to send 700s north of Cambridge for the purpose of train crew competency, which was the comment I was replying to.

Can anyone post which units are “wrong way round” (ie with first class positioned at the country end)?

I have at least 379007/18/21 as wrong way round. Anyone know of any others?

GTR were quite good about getting the 387s all turned to face the same way, so hopefully this will get sorted with the 379s.
379018/021 have now been turned, not seen 007 recently.

Also, 57306 is dragging 379030 from Hornsey to Selhurst this morning, presumably for repairs beyond Hornsey’s capability

LRR has 1T48 1718 Kings Cross - Kings Lynn on 16.12.25 as the first working for 379006, but may be there was something prior to that?

Are there currently any 379 diagrams on the King's Cross - Letchworth/Cambridge services off peak?

Not in the week, it’s mainly 700/0 with two pairs of 387s out, plus a further pair which stables at Letchworth between the peaks. I can’t remember offhand about weekends.

The majority of 379 work is currently on Fen Line services plus a few other services at the extremes of the day and peak workings.

i have had the pleasure of a 379 at both Saturday and Sunday - but engineering work was going on so it could be unit balancing. I didn’t realise how bad the service was for 700/0 now. I know they are much harder to avoid then the used to be - which will explain why. Hopefully when the 379s reliability go up, more 700/0 can be removed.

Just out of interest. When will there be another 379s stock move from Worksop to Hornsey for the last 3 379s that are with Worksop, please?
Probably when Hornsey manages to get 009/11/14/30 operational. Could be a while before there’s space in the shed for any more

Don’t count 379030 as being in the way at Hornsey, we appear to be storing it at Selhurst!

There is theoretically scope for a small reduction in 700/0 work.

The current service calls for 25/30 379s and 8/13 387s, though in practice there’s one fewer 387 due to 387101 being long-term out of use, three extra 387s not yet transferred to Southern, and this isn't what is currently being resourced due to the 379 fleet not being at full strength yet.

Remembering that the 365s were diagrammed for 37/40 (or was it even 38/40 at one point, I can’t remember), albeit quite often with 317/321 covering, so this isn't a heavy demand on the fleet.

So 27/30 379 and 10/13 387 ought to be easily possible. That would theoretically reduce 700/0 usage by two. Where thing could get muddied is if the Peterborough peak extras need to be increased to 12 cars (currently only one is each way), in which case either extra 700/1 need to be found, or there would have to be some shuffling round to allow 387/379 to take over any 12-car workings. In theory this doesn’t preclude more 387/379 staying out between the peaks, but it makes things more awkward as there would have to be some additional 4-car working to/from Hornsey.

If we’re going to place a bet on it, I’d say the current mix will stay, perhaps in a year’s time there might be one more 387 pair out on the 2C/2L between the peaks, but probably unlikely to be more than that. What is more irritating in the current timetable is the 387 workings tend to be more bunched, so there are long periods where successive services are 700/0. I'm fortunate that my regular patterns tend, by good fortune, to lend themselves to the two 387 pairs.

To ditch all GN 700 working would require something in the region of 20 Electrostar units, so is unfortunately unlikely to happen unless something else forces a change.

Class 365s were 38 from 40 at one point, with the overall GN fleet being 60 from 65.

Class 379s were 27 from 30 for years. Nine pairs to Stansted and three triples from and to Cambridge in the peaks. However, in the latter years on West Anglia, it was rarely achieved, with a pair of 317s substituting almost every day.

Wonder why that was? The 387s were getting a high availability rate. Probably still are compared to the 700s. Not sure when the 379s are now. Probably no where near the 387s. Hopefully soon passing the 700s.

The 379s aren’t great for sure, probably to be expected given the period of storage. We just have to hope that this improves. It does seem to be the case that storage of rolling stock causes no end of problems.

I think that they will probably get back to the same standard as the rest of the electrostar, although I wouldn't be surpised if it isn't until late 2027 before they are more reliable in service then the 700s.

When East Midlands Railway was formed (under stagecoach) they got all the worse rolling stock of which some was stored. They did turn them around after 2 years.

As an example of what’s going on at the moment, 14 out of 15 387s are in service on GN today, which presumably means 19 379s out assuming no short forms or cancellations. It does seem like the 387s are very much holding the fort.
